My new 16'Dauntless came with a Honda 90 and a 13 1/4 x 17 aluminium prop. The Honda is supposed to rev at WOT between 5000 & 6000 rpm with max hp at 5500. The current prop gets to 5500 at WOT with light load but has a little sluggish hole shot. The dealer says he has a 13 1/2 x 15 Solas SS prop (slightly cupped)I can buy for under $300. He said the 15" prop should bring WOT to 5900 rpm and give me a better hole shot. My first question is: has anyone heard of Solas ss props and are they any good? How will the additional 1/2 inch of diameter affect the performance? I use the boat for fishing and skiing. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I believe the Honda 90 uses Mercury's mid-size 4 1/4" gearcase, so any prop that fits a Merc 90 would fit yours. At one time Honda was buying their complete lower unit for these engines from Mercury. Don't know if they still do.

There have been other rumors here of sluggish acceleration out of the hole with the Dauntless 16 hull, combined with heavy engine weight and 4-stroke lackluster acceleration performance. The 15" prop sounds like it might work for you, but I'd try a Stilleto or Mich Wheel Rapture instead.

If none of that works, put a good 115 2-stroke on the boat!
