Does anyone know where I may find test reports/comparisons for outboard motors. I was hoping to find something where someone (under controled conditions) compared 50hp motors on the same boat.

The Yamaha site has some tests in PDF format.

You will have to dig around in "boat test with these engine brands"

You can find some tests here:

http://www.honda-marine.com/prop_test/

I think the 50HP only shows Honda engines with different props, but other HP catagories show non-Honda engines.

The type of test you are looking for, which uses the same boat and mounts many different motors on it, is hard to find. Most of these test reports are produced by the engine maker or the boat maker (who has a deal with a particular engine maker).

TRAILER BOAT magazine has published a few comparison tests, but I don't know if they just give them away online. You may have to buy a back issue.

Any engine test is also a propeller test, and the results may be more influenced by the propeller used than by differences in the engines. A bad propeller choice can make an engine look like a dog.

Powerboat Reports has run a few such tests. They have a web site and reprints can be ordered from there. They are a consumer reports type of publication for boaters that does not sell any advertising at all, so their tests are pretty objective.

The Boattest.com website has some nice audio-video boat tests, but one should be aware that these are not without some financial support from the manufacturers or brands mentioned.
