I saw a guy lose his camper trailer yesterday on Route 1 in Delaware. He was accelerating as he pulled out of a gas station when this happened. So, he wasn't going to fast and noone got hurt. It appeared that his load equalizing hitch assembly broke away from the adapter which plugged into the receiver on his truck. When the trailer yanked on the safety chains, they broke too.

When I got home, I did a Yahoo search on "hitch failure" and I got back a bunch of hits concerning GM factory installed receivers on GM trucks. All of the posts mentioned that the receivers are actually tearing apart. Some people said that they have found cracks where the receiver tube is welded to the receiver frame. If you have one of these receivers, you probably should look it over. (These failures are different than the one I saw in Delaware)
