I'm considering putting a Suzuki 70 hp 4 stroke on my Montauk. I mainly use it on the ocean to fish spots up to 30 miles from port so I mainly want dependability and mileage. Hole shot and top end speed not as important. I'd appreciate any input from anyone who has this motor.

I have this engine, Placerville, as do about a dozen other members. Mostly on Montauks.I think it is a great engine, certainly the best outboard I have ever owned, and I have owned a bunch. A search will turn up many testimonials. Check out my post in Marketplace about a great deal on one at iboats. Red sky at night. . . JB |

Placerville,I just recently installed the df70 on my montauk. I love it. It is quiet as night, and runs for ever on very little fuel. Eight and a half hours of fishing on Pyramid Lake, with about a thirteen mile triangle crossing of the lake at 4500 rpm and I used less than three gallons of fuel.I suspect that will even improve when it is fully broken in. She trolls at at speeds as low a 1.8 mph. Need I say more? As your name suggests, are you in northern CA, come on up to Minden and I'll take you fishing at Pyramid and you can make your decision based upon first hand experience. Joe |

I recently repowered my 1986 Montauk with this motor. It is so quiet I have to remind myself to turn it off at the ramp. I went from a Merc. 90 hp. to this DF70 and I love its performance. Before I bought it I called the Outboard Motor Shop in Alameda and asked one of the owners what he thought of this engine. His response--"The Evinrude(Suzuki) DF70 is the best motor that OMC never made". Buy it! I would not suggest buying used motors from Iboats--they generally were used commercially and have alot of hours on them. Royce |
