With proper maintenance and under average conditions in salt water and on a 22' Outrage how many hours could one expect before a major overhaul for a Johnson 225HP V-6 Ocean runner motor. What would be considered the working life between major work?

4000 hours is very real with good maintenance, proper propping, & sensible throttle advancement [ which means, as long as it wasen't run at wot all the time ].

I treated my 1994 225 like gold and she blew a piston at 329 hours....low hours was the problem. Outboards like to be run and my father thought 5 hours a season was good enough for the last 5 seasons.
