Author Topic:   Yamaha 300 HPDI - Quality

A friend is considering re-powering his OUTRAGE 25 with a Yamaha 300 HPDI. I've seen some concerns about the Yamaha 300 HPDI. Reports indicate that they need high octane fuel, and have problems. Can anyone shed light on this? I'd like to steer my buddy in the right direction.

I read a lot about outboards and general boating interests on another boating forum, in addition to this one. Now I do not have first hand experience, but there are supposedly many issues on the larger block Yamaha HPDI's, specifically the 300 HPDI. Yamaha is aware of the problem. From what I remember reading there seems to be an issue with the number 2 piston. Email me if you like and i will direct you to the discussions on the other forum.

I know I would be concerned.

I agree with Sal.

Way too many issues which Yami can't seem to fix.

I wonder what JD Powers is going to say about the problems with this actually 275HP engine? This is not good for "customer satisfaction rating #1". Maybe this is why I'm seeing 275 Verados all over the place these days, even on Yamaha "tied" brands such as Contender.

I would go with the twin 150's.

LHG, if Im not mistaken Mercury fourstrokes in the smaller range use yamaha blocks? I wouldnt be pokin fun at yamaha. The saltwater seriesII are the most relaible engines ever. I have twin 250s with over 2000 hours and no rebuilds or problems...

I would agree that two-stroke EFI's are the most reliable engines ever. So are mine. But wasn't it that Yamaha Dealer who said our two stroke engines are DEAD, and two strokes would include the 250/300 HPDI. Maybe he knew what he was talking about?

And all along I thought Yamaha bought four of its four-stroke engines from Mercury?

I don't recall ANY previous first-hand discussion about the HPDI 300-HP engine from Yamaha that has taken place here. I don't think that engine is particularly popular with classic Boston Whaler owners.

I think that using GOOGLE.COM to search for this information would be a very productive way to locate other on-line information on the engine.

Mercury and Yamaha have a long history of collaboration, particularly in the development of four-stroke outboard engines in the 30-60 HP range.

Jim, I sent you a couple of photos of what looked like a new 27 Guardian, MD registration, with a pair of 300 HPDI engines on it. They seemed to be running just fine, just like all the Optimax's and Ficht's I see.

As a long time Yamaha owner and huge fan of their products, I can say with all seriousness that I personally would NOT yet buy the Yamaha 300hp.

Do yourself a huge favor and read up on these two websites below:

www.thehulltruth.com

and

http://outdoorsbest.zeroforum.com/zeroforum?id=16

This will probably give you enough data to hold off on buying an engine that has yet to find a fix to some serious problems.

I got one. Don't buy one. I can elaborate, but I'm so frustrated, I can't see posting anymore....see www.thehulltruth

I agree do NOT buy one and I have nothing against Yamaha's actually like them, but personally know someone who is still dealing with Yamaha to get his motor(300hpdi) straightened out. Yamaha is (supposeably) doing everything they can, with the exception of engine replacement. Pretty sad because this fellow spent some of his retirement savings in order to have a reliable fishing rig and cannot trust it enough to go out without a buddy boat. The Yamaha dealer that called 2 strokes dead dinosaurs must have been talking aboout his top of the line 2 stroke.

Irrespective of whether the 300 HPDI has solvable problems, I would stay away from this motor simply because I believe they are asking quite a bit from a 3.3L 2-stroke motor. I think this model may have the highest HP per liter ratio of any recreational motor which means to me that it has the least amount of room for error.
LHG posted 01-28-2005 02:31 PM ET (US)     Profile for LHG
Regardless of the HP rules, the 275 4-stroke Verado is the most powerful recreational outboard you can currently buy. It supposedly dyno's at 277, vs the 300 HPDI at 275. Mercury was wise not to stretch it to a 300 under the rules.

I LOVE THIS FORUM! You guys are all great. I passed your observations to my buddy... he has postponed his decision (and I think cancelled the idea of the 300)
Peter posted 01-28-2005 03:44 PM ET (US)     Profile for Peter  Send Email to Peter
I'm not exactly sure what the Verado 275 has to do with the topic regarding 300 HPDI quality, but since that has been placed on the table your buddy should also know that in order for the V275 to turn the dyno to 277HP (assuming that is true), his transom would need to support almost 650 lbs of materials and his fuel lines would have to be be able to convey almost 30 gallons per hour of PREMIUM grade fuel to do it. Your buddy would also have to scratch out a much bigger check just to have that privilege. Not very impressive in my view.

I retract my previous comment....and tell your buddy I will sell you a beautiful, 04 300 HPDI with 35 hours on it REAL CHEAP!!...or anyone else for that matter

I am serious if anybody wants one.
(I'm a lousy salesman,huh?)

A thank-you to NedsPoint for his firsthand observations on this motor. I do believe that yours are first such mentions here on the forum regarding the HPDI-300 engine by anyone who actually owned one.

Having worked on them, they have the same prob. as any other DI high HP 2stroke. Trying to make as much HP with the least amount of fuel. LEAN LEAN LEAN = Sensor codes and blown engines.
brisboats posted 01-30-2005 01:13 PM ET (US)     Profile for brisboats  Send Email to brisboats
My firsthand observations only come from knowing a friend that owns the motor and towing his 300hpdi equipped boat (twice) in and subsequently removing the plugs at the dock. My firsthand observation as the first plug was removed from my wrench was a severely oil fouled plug. As each of the remaining plugs was removed I observed a similar fouling condition. I was unaware that ownership of the motor was a prerequisite to posting any observations be they firsthand or general in regard to this motor.

I will add in my defense that I did own the boat, the tow rope and the wrench that removed the plugs. I did not own the water, nor the HPDI equipped boat, nor the dock where we removed the plugs. I do not own the moon, the sky, the ocean or many other things I have been known to comment on from time to time.

Thought you might want to know how this story ends. My buddy ended up with a 4 stroke 250 Suzuki on his 25' 1989 Outrage. Thanks to all who supplied 1) first hand knowledge with their own equipment 2) first hand knowledge with others equipment and fianlly 3) second hand knowledge and hears say. I value all of the inputs... I just asign different weightings to each.

As I was just saying...... One more engine sale for a Classic Whaler where we have the consumer opting for a Japanese 4-stroke over a 2-stroke DFI. Maybe that Yamaha dealer who said 2 strokes are dead knew what he was talking about, and he doesn't even know about CW.

And even better with a Suzuki, from a distance everyone will think you bought American.

Would you or JimH be kind enough to e-mail me that Guardian photo? Or is there a link to it?

Muchas gracias.

I don't have any digital images to email you, else I'd have probably posted them here on the website already.

I've checked that one out many times before. I just really wanted to see the one with the dual 300s LHG said he had some pictures of.

Jim, if the photos are acutally paper photographs, maybe you could scan and post them whenever you receive them?

Plese let me know if there's a slim chance that I'll get to see those photos. If there's no chance, let me know that too and I'll put a cork in it :-\

Does anyone know which spark plugs should be used with 2004 300 HPDI's? The owners manual calls for NGK BKR6EKU but the dealer and on-line parts catalogs call for BKR7EKU. What gives?

Thanks!

NedsPoint posted 03-16-2007 05:40 AM ET (US)     Profile for NedsPoint  Send Email to NedsPoint
Sold my 300hpdi late last summer. I had the manual which identified the correct plug. I know those suckers cost around $100 for 6.

Prior to that, I had the updates done to the engine. I really did not own it long enough to determine if those updates cured the plug fouling issue. I have heard from others that it did.

[This author is the] current owner of a 2005 Yamaha 300 HPDI [which] has 982 hours, a blown the power head, one piston in pieces, and a water leak somewhere. It's in a zillion pieces this afternoon looking for the reason it happened. Yamaha did [provide a remedy] and are replacing just about everything. Other than [the Yamaha 300 HPDI engine] being super sensitive to the slightest moisture in fuel filter, I have never had any problems until last week and a 35 mile tow back. The Yamaha 250 [is claimed to be] stronger then the 300.

The State of Utah runs Yamaha on all its Whalers with no exceptions. I have seen the OX66s, then the HPDIs and a few 4 strokes are showing up. They have stayed with Yamaha because of an excellent track record of reliability.

At Utah Lake, one of our larger lakes, the resident 27ft Whaler Guardian showed up with twin 300s HPDIs two years ago. Last summer it had two new 250s HPDIs installed. I directly asked at the State shop (by the lake) why the change so sudden. The answer back was "concerns" They had no problems yet, but quickly opted out for the 250s HPDIs which they had good success with.

My question to LHG

Here is a earlier quote of yours earlier in this thread

"I would agree that two-stroke EFI's are the most reliable engines ever."

Do you mean "two stroke EFT" to include the Mercury EFIs and the Yamaha OX66s? From my experience those seem to be the bullet proof two strokes of all time. Not clean or quiet really, but reliable.

Are you also meaning "DFI" two stroke motors are not necessary part of your quote? meaning current DFIs including Optimax, HPDI and E-tec

Thanks

Lots for funny comments here. Hum, Higest HP per Liter! Rated high emission and oh great on gas too.
Sounds like a dream design to me. Dealer saying you never see these again, yah. Dinosore, 4 stroke looks like, its called emission standards. They were slated to go. Like the V8 we all love in our race cars.
I take this Yammie any day over a new 4 stroke and great warranty too.
Oh put a pair of 150 on instead of 1 300 yammie. That a huge waist, cost more to buy and more fule to run.
Merc so much better. Ya know Merc owns yamaha and Tohatsu.
Not sure why ya ripping on them I remember when I bought my 300 yammie 2005. I wanted a merc but it was like 5K more and 1 yr warranty I got 6 year warranty sound like a good company to me.
4 years running at 982 hours on the same block (Mircle motor). That a ton of use guys and Yamaha is fixing everything, what wrong with this piture? Nothing.
Sad advise you gave your friend he might of missed a great deal on a very good motor!

The discussion about buying a Yamaha 300-HP HPDI took place about four and a half years ago. If bushmen wanted to participate and offer an opinion to the prospective buyer, he arrived too late.

I have read bushmen's article several times, but I am not quite sure what motor it endorses. I am also not sure precisely what elements of it are offered as sarcasm and which are in earnest. It contains many incorrect statements, and I am not certain if these are intended as mockery or factual. In short, although an opinion is apparently being offered, I am afraid I do not quite understand it.
