In different sea conditions, what ride can be expected of an OUTRAGE 25 WD? What is the expected range on an OUTRAGE 25 WD with 140 gallon tankage when powered by twin 1997 150-HP Evinrude Ficht outboard engines? Is an OUTRAGE 25 WD suitable for use as a "canyon boat"?

3whaler has an 1989 Outrage 25 WD and twin 150 Evinrude Fichts. I think that his are 1999 models.

Generally speaking, the classic Boston Whaler boat hulls which have the Whaler Drive option tend to need more horsepower than the same hull with the standard notched transom. At 300-HP the OUTRAGE 25 WD will be powered below maximum. The catalogue does not explicitly state what the maximum was, but I believe it was given elsewhere as 400-HP for a Whaler Drive 25-foot hull.

The Whaler Drive seems to produce a noticeable decrease in fore-and-aft pitching of the hull. It also makes the hull harder to run in a bow-high attitude. It gives the hull a very comfortable ride. The OUTRAGE 25 hull is a very seaworthy hull and should be capable of making long runs offshore.

Fuel consumption rates will depend on speed, of course. The Ficht engines are more fuel efficient than traditional two-stroke engines, so with 140-gallons aboard, you should have quite a bit of range.

I have a 1987 Boston Whaler Boat Price and Spefication index, dated february 1, 1987 it show the WD HP specs.

Hopefully its legible. If isn't the rating were for 20 = 300-HP, 22 = 400-HP, and 25 = 450-HP

I beleive the rating were reduced later to 280, 300, 400 respectively

The OUTRAGE 25 WD hulls have always carried a 450 HP rating.

Without a Whaler Drive, the maximum for 25-foot hulls is 300-HP.

Thanks for the JPEG of the specification chart. I can see the values you mention. Also, I can confirm that following the publication of that chart the values were reduced, as you mention, at least in the case of the 22-foot hull. On my REVENGE 22 WT WD the capacity plate shows the maximum horsepower as 300-HP, not as the 400-HP mentioned in that chart. This is on a 1990 model year hull.

In any case, to get back to the OUTRAGE 25 WD boat, I am confident it is a beautifully handling ocean boat. I have not driven on myself, but I did have some fun in February of 2004 cruising downwind along the coast from Hillsboro Inlet to Port Everglades in an OUTRAGE 25 with some rather good swells and waves rolling in from the northeast. The OUTRAGE 25 gave a fine account of itself. We even had a fellow lose his hat, and we made a quick turn around to recover it. This was inshore with 4-8 footers rolling by, and I don't recall any problem getting around in the stuff. There was a lot of salt spray on the hull and gunwales that need washing off later, but everyone on board was dry and comfortable.

The classic Boston Whaler hull really handles very nicely in a downwind and following sea situation, and the bow never carves wildly off in a new direction. I suppose that going upwind into 4-8 footers it might be a different story.

The ability to slam into head seas is not the only criteria for a boat. Realistically, most people do not go out into 4-8 footers. However, many people do come home in 4-8 footers after the wind has built up.

I have a 25 OR w/WD and a pair of '99 150 hp fichts. I get about 2 mpg, but I have a 50 gal fuel tank under my console below the deck. It helps the "ride" but I suffer on the fuel consumption. The '97 fichts are more reliable than the '99s. Having been a ficht tech. for 6 years, their is a difference between the years. That's a whole different story. In short, the WD is alot better ride. I hope this helps.

P.S. I have been on both types of '25s, in all kinds of seas,in the Gulf of Mexico
