The 1975 85HP Johnson (Model# 85ESL75) on my 1964 Sakonnet is still running strong, having seen only limited use primarily in freshwater prior to my ownership. The engine still has its original aluminum prop and while it's not in dire need of replacement, it is showing its age with dings and chips along the blade edges. Rather than paying to have the old aluminum prop repaired and balanced, I think I'd prefer to invest in a new propeller.

The Sakonnet has the forward casting platform along with all OEM mahogony components and two Tempo 12-gallon fuel tanks. The boat has never had any bottom paint. I weigh 220lbs and usually fish with at least one other person around 200lbs.

Given these parameters, I'm wondering if some of our wise participants could please suggest both an aluminum and stainless steel prop for this particular engine on this particular boat that would allow me to reach ~5000 RPM at WOT?

I don't want to over-pitch the engine and cause unnecessary stress. This engine still has a LOT of life left in it and I try to take good care of it.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I have a 13.25 x 17" Stiletto Stainless prop for sale, that fits a Johnson/Evinrude engine. It gave me 5200 RPM on a 90HP, (17-Montauk), so it might be good for 5000 on an 85. I replaced it with a Stiletto 13.25 x 15" to get to 5500 RPM.

Retail is $360. Yours for $160.00 plus shipping.

Does anyone know if this prop would fit the splines on a 1975 85HP Johnson? I'm pretty sure it will, but I'm not positive.

Yes it will fit and the 17" is what you want. The older 85's might not redline as high either so if he gets 5k, she should eb good. That 16 is also lighter than the 17' so a 17" is the way to go. That is a real nice price for that prop too.
