I am considering replacing the original 1967 Merc 500 50 HP motor with a 25 or 30 HP Honda elec. start/remote with power tilt/trim. It seems these motors only add 20 or 30 pounds. These model are pretty much the only thing I can find with a 15" shaft.

Do you feel the weight is OK? Do you feel performance will be reasonable with a 25/30?

If it's really only 20 or 30 pounds, I imagine it's not that big of a difference. However, all that weight is hung out over the stern. Pretty much any whaler owner can attest to the fact that just moving the battery or fuel tanks around in the boat affects it's handling. Regardless, that's an acceptable weight increase. Any transom modifcation is likely to add that much weight anyway.

I have a 25 on mine and it's sufficient, but I think I'd be happier with a larger motor. It's obviously a price and fuel economy issue more than anything else. If we could, I'm sure most of us would throw brand new 40hp motors on our boats.

Where you'll notice the lack of power with a smaller motor is when you've got more than one or two people in the boat. It will plane, but it's a very low, piggy plane. And if you're on fresh water, it might not plane at all. With just two people it should cruise along nicely at 20kts.

I am running a 1964 Evinrude 33hp on my 13 footer and took it out today after a week or two of touch up work on the paint, wood and new bottom paint. It jumped out of the hole, and took off like a scalled rooster. It toppped off on my handheld GPS at 25 mph. Which is fast enough for me when I am that close to the water. I think you will find a big difference between 20 and 30 hp. So if you have a choice...go for the 30 hp one.

I replaced the old (original?) 40 HP motor with a 30HP Yamaha 2 stroke. I have read that the new motors are rated differently for horsepower. I really can't tell that there was a loss of performance in going from 40 HP to a new 30 HP. Mine may be lighter. It does not have power trim or tilt. It goes like a scalded cat when I'm alone, and does OK with five adults. It will pull tubes as well as anything on the lake, pulls kids or skinny adults on skis, but will not plane out heavier old guys on skis.
It's finally rained in AZ. Our biggest reservoir is up to 82%!!!!! I may have to go check it out this weekend. Dave

I think the power you want depends on what you want to do with the boat.

I had a 1981 13 Sport with a 50 Yamaha. Was great for a run around bass fishing, knee boarding, bay blasting boat. But was way to fast for trout trolling. Stern sat a little low with 189lbs hanging out back.

I now have a 1968 13 Sport, being restored, with factory bow and side rails, new wood, and a 2003 Nissan 18 4 stroke. The motor weighs 118 lbs., 71lbs. less than the 50. The older blue hull weighs maybe 100lbs less than a newer one. I am using this boat to take my two boys out to the lakes and up to the Sierra's for trout and what not. The boat is slower, but fast enough and super quiet and thrifty on fuel. Sits level and high.

The 50 was great when I was single and fished around with a buddy.
The 18 is great now that I am taking the boys around.

I have a 1986 Merc 35 on my 1964 13'. I get about 28mph top speed...that's with 12 gallons fuel, cooler full of ice and myself (220 lbs). It feels like you're moving much faster and I wouldn't want to go too much faster in this small boat. It jumps right out of the hole great.

I would suggest you get the 30hp. You don't have to use all you have, but it is nice to have that extra if you need it.

Had a 1988 13 Sport with 30 Yamaha 2-stroke. More than enough power, speed and hole shot. Topped out at about 30-32 with 1 passenger. Pulled 170-lb skier up with little effort. The 30 is the best all-around choice.
