How fast should a properly propped 30hp push a 1968 13' sport? I have a 1997 30hp Merc with electric start and remote steering. I am running the factory prop and I was pushing 21 knots solo today with very light fuel. I just installed a transom mount transducer with speedo so that is where I am getting my stats. Is this typical? She planes out nicely at about 10 knots and runs fine. I am just curious.

Thanks,

Hugh

I would think closer to 30.

I had a 1981 13 with a 1981 35 Evinrude (later rated 30hp) and did around 30 w/o PT&T.

Later repowered with a 1989 Yamaha 40 and did almost 40.

Rebuilt the 40 to a 50 and broke 40.

Check your RPM's to be sure you are in the right range. Also get a GPS and accurately check the speed. Those paddlewheels can be pretty far off.

The 1968 I have now with a Nissan 18 4-stroke feels around 20 or a tad more. It's apart now, but coming together soon.

I would be quite surprised to learn that a 13-foot Boston Whaler hull can maintain plane at 10-Kn (11.4 MPH).

My old Johnson 30Hp would push my 14' skiff similar to a 13 Whaler to 31mph on a good day. 28 was more typical.

'67 with '74 50 Evinrude no trim just tilt 2nd from top trim hole 38mph top trim hole 42mph on GPS...very hairy to handle. Would love to remove the trim tab type feature at the rear of hull and those skegs but don't want to ruin a beautiful 40 yr old very original 13 sport

'73 13' 40 hp 4 cyl merc. elect. start t/t 12 gal. fuel 200 lb. person
30.46kts or about 35mph.
Thought it would be faster.

'77 13' 25 hp johnson pull start no power trim remote steer
same load plus 58 lb german shorthaired pointer
23kts or 26.7mph.
Faster than I thought it would be.

Slows considerably with greater load.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Jimh- I am basing my speed on the paddlewheel transducer so it may be faster than that.

I will repost when I check it against a GPS.

Thanks again,

Hugh
