Somebody talk to me about the 1998 Johnson 225 Oceanrunner? I assume this is an "old tech" carbed pre-Ficht motor along the lines of the old Looper motors. What's the general reputation of the engine?

I had one several years older than the one you mention. Kid across the canal has the 1999 version.

Stinky, loud, never passed a marina with gas that it didn't fall in love with. OMC made a ton of them.

On the upside they run forever. Easy to maintain be/c they are simple. Use the least expensive 2 stroke oil you can find. Parts are relatively inexpensive compared to DFI sensors etc.

Except for the flush feature the 1999 is pretty much like the
mid 80's version. When I moved mine and repowered the engine was running fine, just every time I came home rusted out pieces of the engine were laying on the bracket top. It was time.

A good healthy 1999 with low hours does $4-5K depending on any goodies that might be thrown in-- like gauges, cables, etc.
