My 225 Evinrude Ficht 2004 is having traction slip (a term I'm making up). Symptoms: Upon getting onto plane, the engine starts to whine and looses forward momentum. It's almost as if the propeller was slipping in the water (air in there?) and there's a tremendous loss of speed and it sounds bad.

Any ideas what could be going on? Oh, there's lots of algae on the hull, none on the engine or prop.

Jeremy,

It could be other things but it sounds like a spun hub in the prop.
Do you have another prop you can try?

The first thing I would do is clean that algae and marine growth off the bottom. Is it just algae or barnacles as well? Few things will kill performance like a dirty hull. I would not run it until you find out the cause of your problem.
