I know this has been covered in the past. How about an updated list of the best handheld vhf's? Thanks

I like the Standard Horizons HX470 series. It has a metal alloy case the size of a pack of cigarettes, is submersible, has an LED safety strobe light, and the charger cradle can be interfaced to a GPS for emergency transmission of your position. The original in addition to VHF, also receives and scans Airband, FM, and AM bands. Plus, it has transmit and receive on MURS and FRS in addition to VHF, so you can legally use it for land comms too. Later versions no longer have MURs. This radio is based on a very popular Amateur Radio handheld tranceiver and has a proven history of reliability and toughness. BillS

The "later version" is the HX471. It can receive MURS but
not transmit.

the 460 has served me well the last three seasons.

Did they discontinue the 470?

Yes, it was discontinued. Something about some sort of conflict with the FCC re. MURS tx. The new model is identical except it is receive only on MURS.
