Ok, I asked for help with the prop on my 1982 20'outrage and you all helped a lot. Now I need more help.

I want to repower the boat with a 200hp four stroke engine. I currently have a 1996 Johnson Oceanrunner that I think is a pile of junk - smokes all the time, vibrates, stalls every once in a while and now the charging system is not functioning properly. I have given up on this engine and want to keep the boat. I have done work to the outside and this winter I think I will complete the inside.

My question is where do I find information on tests and comparisons run on current engines? I know of Powerboat Reports but if anyone knows of other comparison sites that would be appreciated. Also, if anyone has any personal input a current 4 stroke 200hp engine, that info would be very helpful too.

Thanks.

All of the 200 HP 4-strokes have a high HP to weight ratio, because all of them are designed to be higher HP engines than 200. The Verado 200 also is the same as the 275 Verado. The Honda and Yamaha 200's are the same as the 225's. The Suzuki 200 is as large as the 250. All will lookhuge on your boat.

To get away from these 600# engines, you might consider the 175 HP range, like the new Verado. Or you might consider the 2-stroke DFI's, like the 200 E-tec, Optimax or HPDI.
With Optimax, there again it makes sense to drop down to the smaller 175, a 435# engine, 90# less than the E-tec 200, and 65# less than the Optimax 200.

But if you're really sold on 4-strokes, the 175 Verado would be a great choice for your hull, which is rated for 180HP I believe

I like the 4 strokes because they are quiet, which is a necessity (found out time and time again) while trying to talk to other boats. The two strokes vibrate and jump around too much for me too.

The engine I have now is 465lbs and the yamaha is 580lbs. Will the 25 hp make up the difference in the 120 lbs? I do a lot of towing (sailboats) and water skiing with the boat loaded with people.

Any thoughts on the advantages of the 200 over 175 with those factors in mind?

oh, and the weight of the 175 yamaha is for a 20" shaft, not 25". Also I just pulled up yamaha because I have heard some things about them and have friends with (smaller) yamaha four strokes. If anyone has other manuf. suggestions, please let me know.
