Any Outrage 22 owners comments on [the performance of a Yamaha HPDI 300-HP outboard motor on an OUTRAGE 22]? I will be re-powering an Outrage, but I have only run or owned an 18 and 25. I was going to put on a 200-HP Yamaha HPDI, but I was having second thoughts. I feel the 200-HP might be a bit underpowered. My Outrage has a standard notched transom and a T-Top. I am sold on the Yamaha HPDI motor. I often run the boat with a load. The 300-HP is the same size and weight as the 250-HP.
I would lke to be able to run about 55-MPH under the right conditions.

Be sure to get the "updates" on that engine if you buy it; problems exist in the extreme for those who bought the motors without updates. Check with Yamaha.

Search the web for posts about the Yamaha 300. They came out with a kit, ONLY for folks who complain and are in salt water areas. The repair takes about 12 hours. Yamaha sent books and a DVD video to show mechanics what to do. If you still want one, make sure it was built after November of last year.

[Using the proper spelling for the names of brands helps make locating articles about them much easier. In this article the spelling of Yamaha has been corrected from several different forms.]

Well that does it ! I am going back to the old tried and proven: .a standard carburetor 250-HP. No frills and no surprises when I am 25 miles offshore. After doing some reading on the big block HPDI performance--or rather non-performance--you couldn't give me one. However, I do like my 200-HP HPDI, but that is a different animal.

Why not look at 250-HP four-stroke outboard motor? It basically has the same specifications as the 300-HP HPDI. You are looking at [a differnce in speed of] 2-3 [miles per hour at wide-open throttle] between both motors. The weight [difference] between both is [like] comparing pennies to dimes. Or even look at the E-TEC, which is lighter than both.

If I were buying a new motor, I would give serious consideration to the fuel economy. A conventional two-stroke with carburetor at 250-HP is going to be consuming a lot more fuel than a low-emission engine.

well i did the jekyl and hyde trip and finally bought the 250hp 4 stroke yam yesterday. i would have preferred to pay less for the motor and more for gas coupled with simplicity...but have to think resale and trend. and i am sure i will love the smoothness and quietnes of the 4 stroke. by the time this motor is hanging on my transom it will cost me about 20k...i am still in shock! hopefully the fuel consumption savings will be significant.
apparently the 250 is the 225 with a variable cam so gets more juice on takeoff and wot.
i spoke to 2 friends who run the 225's commercialy....one friend has a ferry boat with 3 x 225's and just went past 1500 hr check and not one problem or malfunction. other fellow runs whale watching trips in giant ribs..uses the merc version with yam 225 powerhead...he swapped out motors after 2000 hrs and they never missed a lick.

outrage 22 owners....please tell me that hanging a 600 lb engine on my transom will be okay...and not sink me down too much!! my big concern right now.

My 22 Outrage has a 250 Yamaha at 550# and sits very high in the water. 600# not a problem.

Belize- I repowered some 300 hrs ago with a Yam EFI 200hp on my '86 22' Outrage. #452 pounds. Split the difference in fuel consumption between the old carbed Johnson and the latest tech 4 strokers/DFI's. I couldn't be happier. Flawless reliability, good fuel consumption, much improved oil consumption and the price for the engine was much less than the latest tech stuff. Suzi's in the EFI 225hp variety (being phased out) can be had for $7K+. Random thoughts. David

I just finished repowering with a Yamaha 225 four stroke on my 22' Revenge Cuddy. I moved the batteries into the Cuddy to partially offset the 583 lbs (as I recall). For what it is worth, the additional weight has made no apparent difference in the trim and the boat is very stable on plane. If I can get a day without big wind or current, I'll put a performance chart together and post it. I think you will be very satisfied with the motor.
