This is opposite my last post about overpowering a 16ft whaler, I decided to ex that idea and going to chuck on an outboard that has been sitting in the garage for years (free is free), but it is flywheel rated at 40hp, it is a 1975 evinrude 40hp. I know whaler says 35hp is the lowest, but would this turn out to be unsafe? I also have an even older 60hp evinrude in REAL good shape only it has too long of a shaft so I went with the 40hp. What are your opinions on this idea? I plan on just using the boat in the bay, mostly by myself. I just added new components, a wood reversable pilot seat and a used console both of which are fairly light. Maybe I should try and configure the 60hp to fit for the season?

Well the motor is on the boat and I am about to order controls, I figure worst case scenario I get a top speed of 25mph but that is better than letting her sit in the front of the house for a season because I can't afford a new engine.

I will post results from my underpowering experiment when she is finally in for others to refer to when they have to throw the smaller engine on their boat- Tom

Underpowering is a real drag but not nearly as bad as having no power at all. You go out and have fun in your boat. I lived by the term "use what you got" for many years until I could afford what I wanted. Keep working hard and it will happen for you too.

I would use that motor on lakes and rivers only, no ocean or Great Lakes duty. Its going to suck big time with that dinky motor on there. I didnt think the old 60hp engines had 25" shafts, how could it be too long?

I would run the 60 and a kicker in case that antique breaks down
