We were out in my Montauk with 2005 E-TEC 90-HP on Saturday trying to run some sailboat races in the Duluth harbor of Lake Superior. The conditions were such that we ended up canceling the races for the day; pea soup fog, drizzle and temp in the low 40's. About 5 minutes after we initially left the dock, the alarm sounded. I checked the manual and determined that it was related to the oil level in the tank (which I knew to be full). [Later, this is clarified, and it is revealed the alarm condition was the NO OIL alarm, which is not necessary related to the level of oil in the tank--jimh.] I shut down the engine, restarted, and the alarm did not come on for another 5 minutes or so. The alarm continued to operate intermittently until we were idling back to the dock and the engine just died. I was able to restart it a couple of times until I finally couldn't restart it at all. I ended up firing up the newly installed kicker (a 1992 Evinrude 4-HP long shaft) and steamed back to the 1/4 mile distant dock at 5 knots. We troubleshot the engine per the manual, and were unable to find anything that remotely looked like the culprit. Needless to say, I was very disappointed, as until then, the engine had provided 9 hours of flawless troublefree operation. Sunday, I hoped in the boat, and before turning the key, commented to my buddy on the dock "I'll bet it fires right up and runs like a champ." Guess what? Yep! it fired right up and ran like a champ (though the alarm did sound twice while idling at the dock for 10 minutes). I ran the boat to the haul out and loaded her up. I brought it to the dealer yesterday, and he just called me back this afternoon. He said that the engine was all fixed and ready to be picked up. Apparently, there was some bug in the programming that showed up only in cold conditions. It had to do with the oil temperature and water temperature sensors. I didn't get too many of the details, but it sounded like BRP was aware of it and had a fix ready to upload. I was hoping that they would be able to find a definite root cause and repair it. In that respect I am happy and will be able to have confidence in the engine once again. However, a few questions came to my mind that I will get answered tomorrow: 1) Assuming BRP was aware of this, why didn't they contact me before I was left stranded? 2) What engines have this problem? 3) Does BRP intend to issue a recall or service bulletin? In retrospect, the problem I had was not at all threatening, as I had a kicker, and was close to home in a protected harbor. However, if I had brand new twins (for redundancy), and was a ways offshore, this could have been an entirely different scenario. Once I find out the answers to the above questions, I'll post them. -WS |

My 90-HP E-TEC occasionally sounded the horn on me throughout the past winter. I decided to keep the boat in the water for those nice days (eg: New Year's day was 60 degrees, and here on Long Island, NY the winter time is a great time to appreciate how nice the bay is without all the summer yahoos) and so I could get the dog out to the marshes and keep the ice broken up around my big boat. Once the canal froze up every other day or so I would run the motor to keep things broken up, and I came to realize that the sounding of the horn was not a reason for alarm (I AM on my third power head since I bought the motor last Labor Day weekend). When I bought the motor I was warned by the dealer that in real cold conditions the horn might sound if the oil was not warmed up enough by the heat of the motor. If I ever get around to bringing it in for a checkup (one of the lower shrouds is cracked around the bolts that secure them) I will be certain to get any updates for the computer or otherwise. |

Thanks for the information. Most of your questions are rhetorical. We really cannot expect that BPR will appear here to answer them. You should consider asking them these questions directly. The beautiful aspect of modern engines is that their performance is determined, to a great extent, by the software code contained within their engine control modules. If there is a problem in that code, it can be corrected. By the same hand, the downfall of modern engines is that their performance is determined, to a great extent, by the software code contained within their engine control modules. If there are bugs in the code, it can cause problems in the engine operation. The UNIX operating system has been in continuous development for thirty years, yet people still find ways to improve the software code. Getting a software upgrade for the computer is pretty routine--maybe this will become more common for modern outboard motors. |

I read the other day that Mercury issued a software update for a bug in the Verado software. I put a new operating system on both my GPS and Depth Finder this year. I think we will never get away from it. |

How come you had to look up in the manual what the alarm was? The LOW OIL lite would come on when the alarm sounded. You do have the 4 lite System Check gauge that is required for new motors, right? IF it was the LOW OIL lite coming on, then it was probably a glitch in the oil tank float switch or in the gauge, nothing to do with the motor, whether it was and E-TEC or a carbureted engine. And yes, there was a service bulletin about the software update that came out a while back, but as with most bulletins, it only applies to a certain serial number range. |

Good point about the alarm. Unlike many motors, when the aural alarm goes off on an Evinrude there is also a System Check gauge annunciator that provides a visual indication of the source of the alarm. I have this feature on my engine, which is 13 years old! And on the E-TEC there are four additional LED indicators on the engine which signal an additional eight alarm conditions depending on whether the engine is running or stopped. So when an aural alarm is signaled, there should be some additional alarm indicators to help communicate the problem. Was there an indication on any of these visual alarm signals about what was causing the aural alarm signal? |

Jim H - Yes, they are rhetorical questions, perhaps I should have added [by my dealer] when I stated, "I'm going to get them answered tomorrow". I couldn't agree more with your observations about the strengths and weeknesses of the new "fly by wire" engine technology. This became exceedingly evident as we were attempting to troubleshoot the problem! Seahorse - Sorry I wasn't clear about the light that came on - it was the top light on my System Check gauge - "NO OIL" (the "LOW OIL" light is the bottom one). That's what got me concerned, plus the alarm stayed on for awhile each time it went off. I looked it up in my manual (even though I read the manual through cover to cover before I installed the engine) because I didn't recall that there was an alarm that should be sounding with the "NO OIL" light and yet still allow the engine to operate through it's entire RPM range. If it was a "glitch" in the float or the gauge, then why did BRP have a software fix for it? Or did you mean a software glitch? If there was a service bulletin that affected my serial number, whose responsibility was it to contact me (the dealer, or BRP)? Peter - I had my dealer reprogram for XD-100 before the engine was ever started. My intent here is NOT to bash my new E-Tec. I am still very excited about this engine and happy I purchased it. However, I know that there are several people who have either purchased these engines or are in the process of purchasing them, and I honestly felt that my experience here could be of some value to them. I'm picking the boat up in a few hours. I'll post the answers I receive from the dealer later. -WS |

I'm also curious to hear about the 3rd powerhead. As to the cracked shroud: these shrouds are the plastic cowls that go around the shaft housing. If he is using the engine to break up the ice, I would fully expect some damage could occur to that cowl. |

Although I would never allow it to happen, that engine is capable of running without oil for an extended period of time without any damage. You have to wonder why Crabby's engine had the powerhead problem (maybe software or oil). That is two 90hp engines which had a problem and had the power head replaced as Power Boat Reports had one of it's engines have a vibration problem which BRP took care of immediately. They are trying to find out whats the problem. My mechanic recommended and has me running the regular TCW-3 oil. I have been running a kicker for 15 years and I think the set up is perfect. |

I was just curious to see whether there was an oil viscosity/temperature problem. I've read elsewhere that when the temperature is low that use of XD-100 is recommended for the DFI motors. |

I just talked to tech support at BRP. He (the tech support person) felt that the alarm and the engine dying were unrelated. He also said that the engine should have kicked into S.A.F.E. mode and limited the RPM's to 1,500 when the "NO OIL" alarm and light were on. However, the RPM's were not limited when the engine was in this condition. When I pick up the boat, I'm going to get the engine history printout from the mechanic and call BRP back with the information (per BRP's suggestion). BRP did say that if there is a known problem that could cause an engine to quit running, the owners would be notified directly by BRP (not the dealers). |

I believe that on the E-TEC oil system there is a sensor that detects oil flow from the oil injection pump. The engine management module (EMM) monitors this sensor, looking for an indication of oil flow which corresponds to each command to the injector pump to pump the oil. The rate of pumping oil varies with the type of oil being used and the engine speed. If the EMM sees a command to pump oil and no corresponding response from the oil sensor, its program execution branches into a subroutine where it pumps a few extra pulses of oil and looks for a flow sensor response. If this results in the oil system now signaling oil flow in the proper ratio to oil pump pulses, it figures it has cleared the problem and branches back to normal execution of the monitor program. If the extra pump pulses do not clear the problem, they may repeat a few times (I don't recall precisely), until the management module concludes that there is a problem with oil delivery and sounds an alarm. I believe that if there is a NO OIL alarm the engine management software should branch into a new mode to limit engine speed to a low speed where it thinks the engine could run for a while without oil and without damage. It sounds like in cold weather conditions the viscosity of the oil may affect the operation of either the oil pump or the oil flow sensor. Perhaps the algorithm used to monitor this system has been changed to accommodate this. This is another great advantage of an engine with a sophisticated engine management module; it can be re-programmed to work around problems like this and correct them by software solutions, not hardware. It may be possible that if the oil monitor sensor is not signally oil flow but there is actually oil being delivered, the program execution could cause extra oil to be pumped trying to verify the alarm. With the pump working correctly, the extra oil might cause a problem with the engine running too rich, and this could lead to stalling. This might be the scenario of the failure described above--just guessing. |

Jim - WOW! I am impressed at your in depth knowledge of the "brains" on these engines and how they work. That scenario is entirely plausible. I didn't notice any excess smoke from the engine, but given the fog, temperature (we could see our breath), and the fact that the oil is XD-100, I'm not sure I would have been able to tell if it was running too much oil anyway. The way the engine died WAS similar to having fouled plugs, so you may be on to something here. Thanks! |

I have a 2004 90HP E-TEC DSLSR. Six or seven (?) months ago I received a notice, in the mail, from BRP that my EMM software needed an fuel mapping upgrade, a notice that my serial numbers indicated that I was a candidate for the upgrade, instructions to take it to my local dealer. I did so, recieved the upgrade quickly and free of charge, and have not noticed anything abnormal in the engine's operation. My LOW OIL light has come on intermittently, once because the oil level was low, and at other times when the oil level was less than half full, and I was hammering through 3-foot chop. If I slow down, the horn and light shut off. I've never kept going, primarily because I realize shouldn't be smacking my whaler around enough to cause this effect. (O.K. I did have quite a fun time last week jumping waves outside the San Rafael channel. I'm always a very conservative pilot when others are on board, but I found myself alone, everything battened down, with perfect ebb-driven waves, and I just couldn't resist. What a ride!) |

The LOW OIL alarm, I believe, is just a simple float switch in the oil reservoir tank. When the oil level in the reservoir falls below the level needed to keep the float switch actuated, it signals the low oil level. But I think this just goes to the System Check gauge to alert the operator; it does not cause any change in the engine operation via the EMM. If the oil level in the reservoir is neat the threshold level for triggering the LOW OIL alarm, violent motion on the boat may cause sloshing of the oil and cause an alarm condition. |

One nice feature of the E-TEC and Evinrude/Bombardier: you can have access to the EMM via your own device. You can connect a serial data connection and access some of the features in the EMM control yourself. The cost for the software and cable needed is very modest, on the order of $100 or less. Compare this to about one hundred times great cost (e.g. $10,000) and total resistance to giving end-users access found in other engine brands. |

I just got my 2005 225 ETec back from the mechanic due to the fact that I got the Low Oil warning and buzzer on my last fishing trip. I run the large 3 gallon oil tank with xd 100. I have the Commander series tachometer which has an integrated system check gauge. When the alarm went off I was about 20 miles offshore. I was kinda worried to say the least. I shut it down and checked the tank (3/4) full, checked the primer bulb (very hard). So then I marked the oil level in the tank with a pen and continued to run the motor for the rest of the day with no problems (except the low oil read out on my tach. The RPM limiter never kicked in so I figured I was ok since it was still using oil. My mechanic told me that he found no record of low oil anything when he downloaded the history from the engine. He checked the sending unit in the tank and everything checked out. My engine was one that needed a software upgrade and got it while there. I only have 26 hours on my motor but love it so far. I took it out yesterday and all was well so I hope this was just a software problem..... |

I picked up the boat, and I talked to BRP again. I ran Jim's explanation by him (the BRP rep), and he said that is most likely what happened. In addition to the software problem causing the oil injection to go into "rapid fire mode", the fact that my engine is still in break-in mode meant that there was a whole bunch of oil dumping into the cylinders. At this point, I am comfortable with the root cause analysis and the corrective action taken. I consider this matter closed for my engine. I should also add that the level of service and response from both my dealer and BRP has been very good! Hopefully I won't have to test this again. Looks like we're finally going to have summer up here this weekend, so I'll be on Lake Superior (hopefully) catching fish on Saturday and cruising on the St. Croix river with the family on Father's day. SteveDallas, The LOW OIL sender in your tank is just a float with a metal disc on it that completes the circuit between 2 contacts when the oil level gets to a certain point. Sometimes the float can "stick" on the shaft and give a false signal to the SystemCheck gauge on the dash. Because the LOW OIL alarm is not a monitored part of the motor, the computer does not record an error code in the memory. |

I'll say it again: My 90hp e-tec has exhibited similar no-oil warning problems in cold weather conditions as mentioned by the originator of this thread. My 90hp e-tec has also had other problems, some of which supposedly have been addressed by BRP, including total powerhead failure, corrosion on mounting bolts between the lower unit and main housing, and cracked plastic on the lower cowling. Overall, I am pleased with this motor. However, I have high expectations for any motor I purchase and am not tolerant of poor workmanship or inferior materials used in the manufacturing process. I have kept motors running for far longer than many folks would reasonably expect but need a good base product to start with. Peace out brothers. |

Given you had two closely spaced in time failures which woudl seem to be outside the statistical norm, I and others wondered whether the failure wasn't in some way related to the older boat's fuel system. Did you ever have that checked out according to Seahorse's recommendations, as I recall them, and if so what was the finding. |

I had redone the fuel system the season prior to hanging the new motor, but nonetheless we replaced everything from the bottom of the pickup tube all the way to the motor including hoses, bulb, and separator as a precautionary measure. Although it was a cause for speculation (even I wondered about it) I do not believe it was the cause of the failures. |

Peter: Just re-read your question. No, we did not actually check things out but just replaced everything. I would have liked to have run the checks but the dealer made the call. AS I do have a bit of a background in stats (I've taught stats to bio students) I agree that my troubles would seem outside the norm given the number of great reports on this motor; but if a part from the original assembly were out of spec and it was attached to the replacement powerhead I wouldn't be surprised to see a second failure. That is why I was annoyed that BRP did not provide a full dress powerhead replacement after the initial failure. Once again, I like the motor overall but will continue to report on it's shortcomings if it will help BRP make a better product. |

This discussion has become confusing. We are now discussing three engines and two problems. The problem which is the topic here is an alarm of NO OIL on whalersailer's 90-HP E-TEC. But intermixed are reports of LOW OIL alarms. LOW OIL ALARM SUMMARY stevedallas28 reports an apparently false LOW OIL alarm and no record of it in the EMM history file. The lack of a record in the EMM history file is normal because the LOW OIL sensor only signals the operator, not the EMM. The most likely cause of this is a faulty float sensor. This cannot be fixed by changes in the EMM software. ratherwhalering reports that the LOW OIL alarm on his 90-HP E-TEChas only triggered when: --the level was low, thus a proper alarm condition Ergo, ratherwhalering has not reported any false LOW OIL alarms. whalersailer has not reported any false LOW OIL alarms.

If I understand correctly, following the incident with whalersailer's E-TEC, the motor was taken to a dealer and a software patch was applied to the EMM. Did the dealer say that the software patch being applied was specifically to deal with the occurrence of false NO OIL alarms in cold weather operation? |

Thanks for the clarificationm Jim. I agree that my low oil alarm is functioning as designed. Now that I think about it, I do recall a very chilly morning, in my first hours of operation, when a "no oil" light warning and light activated. I shut down, waited a minute or so, restarted, and it did not come back on. I later contacted BRP, and the technical rep told me that if it happened again, I could reset the system by running the winerization process. I did so, and have never had an alarm since. I think that if I were in a colder climate, I would consider doing this more often as part of my shut down or start up procedure. It literally only takes a minute. |

On the 90-HP E-TEC the oil reservoir tank is under the cowling and in close proximity--actually molded around--the powerhead. I would anticipate that heat from the power head would tend to raise the temperature of oil in the reservoir to above ambient temperature after a few minutes of engine operation. The viscosity of the oil should change as it warms, although with synthetic lubricants this change may be less dramatic than with fossil oil based lubricants. I believe the flow sensor is located within the reservoir, so it should also warm as the engine emits waste heat under the cowling. This situation may make the effect of the ambient temperature less influential on the 90-HP E-TEC and its oil system. On other models where the oil reservoir is located outside of the engine cowling, the oil will remain at ambient temperature and, if there is a problem which is precipitated by cold temperature, you would think it might be seen more in those models. Of course, the program executing in the EMM may be different on those models, and there may already be allowances for this. The 225-HP E-TEC mentioned (stevedallas28) has a remote oil reservoir, but, if I correctly presume, it is in Dallas, a locale where I would not expect boating to be done in 40°F ambient temperatures. |

Another factor is the conditions where whalersailer was operating the 2005 E-TEC 90-HP motor: in addition to the air temperature being in the low 40-degree range, I also assume the water temperature was in that same region or colder. When the engine is operating in water that cold there may be some additional effects of the cold temperatures on engine performance. The cooling systems of practically all water-cooled outboard motors ever made are open-loop systems where a continuous supply of raw water is introduced into the engine. When this continuous supply of cooling water is at temperatures in the low 40-degree range (and possible only in the high 30's as is the case in Lake Superior), it may be impossible for the engine to ever warm up to the designed operating temperature. Most boating is conducted in far more temperate conditions, with water temperatures in the 70-80°F range and air temperatures in the 70-90°F range. |

Jim--I think the engineers at BRP have produced the E-TEC engines which can not only perform well at 40°F but at far cooler temps. I know that block warms up fast as I have felt it early this spring when the temps both air and water were in the 30s and low 40s. We spent a lot of hours out on the big pond when the temps were that low and my E-TEC ran smoothly. BRPs first Ads were about how well the E-TEC ran in Alaska with very cold temps. |

fourd'--as far as fresh water boating, when the water temperatures get down below 32°F things get a little harder--pardon my pun. Getting back to the original problem, the engine was still in the break-in period and running on extra oil. This is also a factor in the stalling problem. More important than conjecture: has the software patch eliminated the problem with the NO OIL condition in cold temperature? I look forward to hearing the results, but for whalersailer's sake, I hope it warms up in Duluth. Ambient temperatures in the 40°F range in June are not encouraging. We are heading for Lake Superior in a couple of months, so, please, let's turn the heat on up there! |

Jim-- I just read that BRP claims that the E-TEC is the only outboard engine which has a low oil warning signal. All cars I know have one. Lake Superior is cold most of the year as we have boated up there. We started fishing in March this year and Lake Mich was at 38. The E-TEC didn't seem to notice any difference and it was still on extra oil breakin at that time. My dealer is a fishing buddy and he says he has not heard of other problems like Whalersailers. We are heading out to Door County this week for the rest of the summer.(Good test for the E-TEC) The kings are in and the golf course is recovering from some winter damage. Most of the oil alarm issues that you hear about are due to improper setup and bleeding of the oil system before the motor is delivered to the customer. the setup instructions illustrate how to bleed the oil system, then use the laptop to run a priming program. Because the engine uses so little oil, it sometimes will be a few hours of use before the alarm system will notice an air bubble or a "glitch" in the oil pressure spike. |

Update: I had the boat hooked up on Friday afternoon, and before I took off, I hooked it up to the hose to fire it up (I usually do this before leaving home to make sure everything is operating as it should). I couldn't get it started. I primed the fuel bulb a couple of pumps, then it finally started. It idled fine for about 45 seconds, then it idled poorly and died in exactly the same manner as the previous weekend. At this time, it was just before 5:00p.m., but I was still able to get the mechanic on the phone. I asked him if he had started the engine after the new software was installed. He stated that he had "fired her up for a couple seconds." I related the problems I was having, and he was at a loss for how to get it running. I spent another couple of hours going through the fuel system (again) to no avail. I went to a dealer close to my house and bought a new set of plugs thinking that maybe the originals were fouled. After installing the new plugs, there was no change - the engine just wouldn't run! At that point, I changed my plans for the weekend, and the Whaler was no longer included in them :-( One other peculiar thing that I noticed was that when the hose is hooked up to the engine and turned on, water accumulates in the bottom of the housing around the bottom of the block. The dealer confirmed my suspicians that this should not happen. The boat is going back to the shop tomorrow. I'll post more when I get some answers. -WS |

Peter, I am as certain as I can be that there is no water in the fuel. I say this because: 1) I completely went through the fuel system when I installed the engine. This included replacing the fuel lines, adding a primary filter/water separator. and replacing the 6 gallons of "old" fuel in the system with fresh fuel. 2) The boat has lived in my garage except for the 3 times I have had it out since the work above was done. 3) There is no sign of water in either the primary separator, or in the filter in the engine. -WS |

Just thought I'd ask because the symptoms would certainly give me reason to check for water in fuel which is fast becoming the leading cause of engine problems on the east coast. In all my years of boating I've never had a problem with water in fuel. Since they began dilluting the gasoline with ethanol last year, I've now encountered water in fuel situation twice despite all reasonable precautions taken. |

Unlike the Merc EFI my buddy has (2002 250hp) with an under the cowling separator and a water sensor (that really does work by letting you know and slowing the motor down when it detects water in the bowl), the 90hp e-tec has no water sensor (at least mine doesn't seem to have one). But unlike my buddy's Merc, my motor can pull fuel thru a transom mounted water separator and I have not noted any issues directly related to water in the system on my setup. I don't know if Whalersailor has a separator but they are required equipment in my book. |

WS, is the clear fuel bowl in the engine compartment full when the engine dies? You may also want to double up on your fuel line hose clamps, because it sounds like there may be air in the fuel line. I had a problem with this and solved it by using the solid, expensive, hose clamps and have not had it since. I would also recommend cutting 1/2-inch off the fuel line, at each connection, in case there is a invisible split or pinhole from the original hose clamps. |

Yes, the bowl is full when the engine dies. Rather, I have already done what you mentioned twice! I cannot detect any leaks in the system. In fact, when I cut the hose, fuel under pressure came spurting out. What were the symptoms of your air in the line problem? Guys, don't forget that I had almost 10 hours of trouble free operation with about 15 gallons of fuel run through the system. Crabby, I do have a separator, and I consider them a requirement too. |

WS: Pretty much the same. It would start fine, but idle rough and hesitate. I pumped the fuel ball, and it ran fine. It died underway, but a few pumps of the bulb and it ran fine again until it sat for a few hours, then same thing again. This happened twice in one day, and the next morning I replaced the entire fuel delivery system, including getting rid of the quick connect and replacing the 3/8-inch fuel line, OMC ball pump, all hose clamps, and the brass nipples on the Raycor fuel filter and tank. No problems since. |

I had the same type of problem in the past and one turned out to be a defective bulb and the other happened after the winter before changeing the fuel/water sep filter as it was full of water from condensation in tank. |

I just talked to the mechanic. He checked the ignition system with the computer and found that there was intermitant or no spark. He traced the problem to the stator which is only putting out 50 volts; it should be putting out between 130 and 200. He has a new stator on order and it should be there tomorrow. Hopefully this fixes it... -WS |

Apparently, Stators aren't only delicate parts, they are also difficult to obtain! I called the dealer late Friday to verify that the part had arrived and my boat was ready for me to pick up. Unfortunately, I was told that the part was backordered from BRP, and they had no idea of when it would be available! I elevated the situation to the dealership management who wholeheartedly agreed with my contention that this has become an unaccepable situation (3 weekends now without my brand new engine functioning). They contacted BRP, and BRP shipped one out yesterday. The boat should be ready to pick up today. As has been stated in another thread, the manufacturing processes in place at world class organizations mean that there just aren't a bunch of spare parts sitting on a shelf waiting to be assembled or shipped for warranty replacements. Based on what the dealer told me, it sounds like they literally had to pull one off of the assembly line to ship to me. -WS |

Thanks again for the update. I hope this clear up your problem. A friend with a a five year old Mercury outboard will be installing his third stator. When I sold my Yamaha twins, they were both on their second stator. It seems to be an electrical part that is a common repair. For the stator to be bad on an engine as new as yours would be unusual. Normally it is prolonged exposure to heat that kills them. Perhaps your problem could have been as simple as a bad connector. One lousy crimp and you could have a problem. My master Evinrude mechanic told me the real problem with replacing stators is getting the flywheel off and back on. The magnets in these new E-TEC engines are very powerful. You have to be extremely careful when lowering the flywheel back in place that you don't let it jump off center due to the extremely strong magnetic force. There is a special fixture to prevent this. |

Stators? Delicate part? Really? Why doesn't this match my own outboard owning/operating experience? I've owned 16 different outboard motors over the last 30 years and have yet to replace a stator. Yikes! I gotta' knock some wood! |

I've been thinking about this a bit, and I'm wondering if water under the cowl could possibly cause the stator to fail (water + electrical device usually = failure)? I mention this because of the other problem I related above where there was water in the engine compartment while hooked up to the hose. Does this sound plausible? I hope not, because I would really hate to think that there are parts on an outboard engine that are susceptible to failure if exposed to water! Thanks, -WS |

Late 80's Mercs had a particular problem with stators, and so did the 3.0 liter OMC's of same period. Mercury traced the problem to a bad production run, and had it corrected by 1991. My 1989 Merc 200's both had to have new stators, under warranty, and I just had one replaced on my 1988 Merc 150, which I believe was original. Conversely, my 1997 Mercs are still on the original stators after 1800 hours. A friend with a pair of 1990 3.0 liter 200 Evinrudes had THREE stator replacements done on one, and TWO on the other, in a 4 year period! You know you've REALLY got a failed stator on a Mercury when the engine won't turn over 3200 RPM. There are other more subtle symptons like a slight idle "catch" or "stumble" that tell you it's on it's way out |

[Replacement of the stator] didn't fix [the problem with the E-TEC motor]. The boat started and idled fine, but stumbled and ultimately died in the middle of the lake on which I had taken my family out Saturday afternoon. Luckily, the weather was very pleasant, and a nice gentleman with a Mercury 115 on his Alumacraft towed us back to the lauch ramp. I didn't see any Mercury fans with cameras on shore, but it sure was a great photo op! Four weekends shot. I just spoke with the mechanic, and this time he troubleshot it back to the [EMM]. The [EMM] has to be shipped back to BRP, and they will fix it (or download the data to a new one). Given the engine data stored in the [EMM], they can't just send a new one to install. The repaired [EMM] won't be back here until early next week. Five weekends shot. I'm going to call the local BRP representative, but I don't really expect much from it - I just need to vent! -WS |

While this might be "arm chair quarterbacking" in hindsight, like Tom, I wouldn't have put my money on the stator. I've owned many OMC and Yamaha outboards over the years and have never had a stator go, and those were the days before the overarching quality control processes manufacturers go through now. I hate to say this but it sounds like you need to find a new mechanic. Your motor still seems to have all the symptoms of a fuel delivery problem possibly caused by a faulty fuel pump, faulty injectors, a fuel line obstruction or water in fuel (could also be a faulty EMM). Did you or your mechanic ever hook the motor directly up to a 6 gallon portable tank with known clean fresh fuel and a different fuel line and see if it would run? |

Yes, and [using different fuel] did not [get the engine running]. Additionally, the mechanic spent a couple of hours on the phone with BRP going through the entire diagnostic scenario, and [EMM replacement] is what they all came up with. Also, whenever the engine quits, the clear fuel filter housing in the engine is always full of clean, clear gasoline, and there is absolutely no evidence of any contamination or desbris in there. -WS |

WS--I am very sorry to hear your new E-TEC has let you down, again. Unfortunately, it sounds like all the previously diagnosed cures and replacement parts did not actually fix the problem. I am sure many are beginning to think this motor really has a lot of problems, but it probably only has one--the original but as yet unrepaired problem. It is interesting that the Engine Management Module (EMM) --above I think you refer to this with the acronym ECU but I believe that is not correct--has to be sent back. My guess is there are two reasons for this: --the factory wants to see this EMM for more analysis of the problem In the E-TEC engine the EMM has to be programmed with the serial numbers of the fuel injectors. Each E-TEC fuel injector is tested and calibrated; its serial number contains information about its characteristics. This data is used by the EMM in setting up the fuel mapping for the engine. I think it is human nature to have some distrust for a mechanical device if it has failed on you once or twice before. I think a lot of husbands have had to buy a lot of wives new cars because of this. I hope that E-TEC gets fixed and your faith in it is quickly restored. Please keep this saga going. I think many are reading it with interest. |

Jim H, Your reasons for the sending the EMM back are exactly what I was thinking too. Once this problem is fixed, there is no doubt in my mind that I will have complete confidence restored in and be very happy with the engine - I just wish I was at that point 4 weeks ago. I'm still very excited about the technology, and I think that BRP has a bright future. On a sidenote, my dealer called around to the other half dozen or so dealers in the Twin Cities area, and out of about 150 E-Tec's sold over the last couple of years, mine is the only one with any reported problems. I take that as a good sign. Luckilly for me, the problem hasn't kept me off the water - I've just put alot more miles under the keel of my sailboat than I had planned! Seahorse - you have mail! Update- BRP tested the EMM, and they found the problem to be exactly as I experienced. They are replacing the EMM with a new one that is shipping to my dealer today. I should be able to pick up the boat tomorrow. -WS |

WS: Don't forget about the water you have seen accumulate in the cowling. I would ask your dealer if this could this have been from the EMM itself (I believe it is water cooled), or if it is a secondary leak that caused the EMM to fail. I hate to be a pessimist, but remember, earlier your mechanic agreed that it was not normal to have water accumulate in the engine housing. I'd hate to see you lose another few weeks because of a simple problem that causes more complications. I guess what I'm saying is to make sure your mechanic is confident he is treating the disease, not the symptoms. |

Rather, Don't worry - when I pick it up this time, I'm going to insist that we fire it up on the hose and check for leaks. I think the EMM was bad from day 1. The first time I had the boat out (after dealer prep), it died after about 15 minutes, and I had to paddle back to the ramp. I thought that it might have been a fuel problem (though unlikely as I had checked it all out during the instal), so I re-did the entire system. In retrospect, the failure was exactly the same thing I've been battling all along. -WS |

Whalersailer, The factory received the EMM and has not run a complete analysis on it yet, but they were able to duplicate anomalies with it. A new one is on the way to your dealer and it may even show up as early as tomorrow. Please keep us posted. |

I picked the boat up yesterday and took it out for about an hour last night. The engine ran flawlessly. I'm planning to use the boat quite a bit this weekend, so I'll report back next week that (hopefully) all is well. -WS |
