Two rumors about the Verado:

The 300-400 HP Rumor: Mention of a 400-HP Verado first appeared in October 2002. This is almost three years ago. Yes, yes, I know, this was almost two years before anyone had even heard the word VERADO, but the talk was out there long before the engine was even introduced. So for three years people have been talking about a 400-HP Verado, but so far nothing more than 275-HP. Is there any hope for this? Or just another rumor?

Bottom of Lake Erie Rumor: It has been mentioned that there have been problems with the new engine mount on the Verado, and that there may be a Verado on the bottom of Lake Erie because of this. Any more information on this? Or just another rumor?

In the July 05 issue of Trailer Boats Mag, Jim Barron reports that the Merc Racing team has produced a 400hp, 7000rpm Verado. I'll bet LHG will be beside himself with joy!!!

'fourd--read that again. Jim Baron just reports rumors of a 400-HP version. We've been hearing that for years. I want to see it in a catalogue.

Guy in my hunting club has a BIL who works for Mercury in Fond du Lac. The rumors of a very expensive "artificial reef" are true. He wasn't sure if the recovered it or not.

considering the 250, 275 HP Verados size one would think 400 ponies could be squeezed out of that block no problem..

Just as interesting, here is a several page thread off of scream and fly last month about rumors of a new v8 ETEC 350-400hp coming out from Evinrude. Even after hearing all of the rumors from Evinrude/Mercury, I will believe it when I see it. The Verado still has not even reached the 300hp level and the 275hp requires 92 octane fuel to get there. While many boat builders have been building much larger vessels targeted at outboard motors (i.e. 47 ft Intrepid with quad 275hp Verados) the niche that these rumored outboards would fill is taken up by triple and quad 250hp, 275hp and 300hp motors. US Customs has done extensive testing with a 39 midnight express and has gone with quad 225hp EFI over triple EFI 300x time and time again when possible. The outboard motor industry has had the ability to build 330hp+ outboards for well over a decade now(OMC v8 in mid 1980s and 300 EFI promax in late 1990s) but has choosen not to because the majority of people with these supersized OB powered boats would choose triple 250hp over twin 375hp motors once the ora of the new engines died down. The same holds true with a single 375hp and twin 175/200hp motors. While I would love to see recreational outboards go over the 325hp mark in the near future, I just dont think it will.

Sorry about the links but I thought they were important

If you can get 275 Hp at 6000 rpm, it's not that much a stretch to get 400 hp at 7000 rpm. You just need to maintain a fairly flat torque curve up that high into the RPM range. With a supercharger, it might be as simple as cranking up the boost and adjusting the fuel calibration. BillS

Its not as simple as turning up the boost because detonation becomes a problem. The more boost the supercharger makes there is a corresponding rise in heat also. Trying to squeeze over 2hp pre cubic inch out of an engine is a big challenge if you want the engine to live more than a season.

As is stated above a 350hp outboard that needs 100 octane fuel is pretty useless in the real world. Heck I wouldnt even want an outboard that needs 92 octane, try finding that at most on water gas stations

You're right, and boost is not the answer in and of itself. The key to getting the higher HP is to run a fairly flat torque curve up to a higher RPM. You can even substantially retard timing at those higher RPMS,and richen the mixture, with some moderate drop off of torque, and still get a lot more HP by running the motor up to 7K or so. BillS
