I want to buy my boyfriend a diagnostic tool for troubleshhoting his Mercury Optimax 135 outboards, does anyone know where I can find one, or where I should look? Thanks |

JBO: You can use a plain old PDA like a Palm Pilot. The software is available from any authorized Evinrude/Johnson outboard dealer and the connector from the PDA to the engine is also easy to find. Read the enclosed link for a discussion of the software: http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/003074.html |

JBO; Sorry, I thought you were looking for a diagnostic computer for an ETEC engine. From what I recall, the software for Mercury engines is proprietary to Mercury Marine and only an authorized dealer service center can use it (and afford it). If you wish, you can purchase a good shop manual for your boyfriend's engine. That would be a great gift as well. By the way, welcome to the forum. |

Here is a list of items needed to service Mercury products. The prices are a bit out of date. Merc also now has laptop software but it is for dealers only as it has to be "reregistered" every 60 or 90 days. Mercury DDT for Optimax and stern drive 91-823686A 2 scanner w/ 10' ext. harness $1365.00 91-822608--6 cartridge for O/B 2000 & prior. $178.00 91-880118--2 cartridge for Smartcraft 2001 Optimax & some MerCruiser $168.05 |

From what I can tell, the Mercury Diagnostic tools are not intended to be sold to the customer--well, judging from those prices at least not to customers without a great deal of money. Even if you had the diagnostic tool, I wonder if you could get any support or information from Mercury about what it was going to tell you and how to use it. They just do not seem at all disposed to giving this tool or this information to their customers. |

The new Verados will download information via an RS232 port to a laptop. However, no word on the software required to do so. |

Given the advanced design of the Verado, it seems surprising they would be using anything as archaic as RS-232 for serial data. I would suspect something more in-tune with 2005 like a CAN Bus port. |
