I'm considering moving up to a 1998 Outrage 20 with a 200-HP Mercury from a 13 foot Boston Whaler boat. What [speed is possible with a 1998 OUTRAGE 20 with 200-HP]? Also the boat does not have trim tabs. Does it need them? Thanks in advance.

I think you will find a very significant difference between the two boats. The top speed of the Outrage 20 will depend on the weight carried, but should be above 40-MPH.

drd,

I have a 1996 19 Outrage with a 2.5L 150 EFI, T-top, fish package etc... My boat does 42 mph with a full tank and two people on board and Florida heat. The 1996 19 Outrage is the same boat as the 1997 & 1998 20 Outrage. You should see nearly 50 miles per hour with the 200. Especially if you have no T-top. A 200 EFI Merc is probably the best engine you could have back in 1998. It only weighs 425lbs.

Does this boat need trim tabs? Yes. I don't have them but I wish I did. According to Boston Whaler the wood is already in the transom as tabs were a factory option. These boats tend to porpoise pretty bad in anything over two foot seas. According to others here on CW, the tabs will fix that.

Otherwise, I think 1996-8 20 Outrages are great boats.

Thanks for the quick replys. Do you guys think a nissan xterra(w/ supercharger and tow package) would be enough to trailer the boat maybe a few times a year at the most.

drd - I just sold a '98 Outrage 20 with T-Top and 175 Ficht, and it was a great boat. Top speed was about 42 mph fully loaded. And yes, it definitely needs trim tabs. Mine would porpoise under a number of conditions until I added tabs. Be aware that this can be a difficult project because the transom is curved and the tab hinges are not. I made compensating wedges out of Starboard material, but it took some doing. You'll find the tabs made the 20 a different, much better boat.

I towed it with a 190 HP V6 Toyota 4-Runner, no problem.

thanks for the replys. I just put a downpayment down on her, and should be taking her home next week.
Barry, What kind of tabs did you use? also where did you put them on the transom? thanks

Attaching trim tabs to the classic Boston Whaler Outrage hull is somewhat difficult.

Because of the non-uniform transom, the location of the tab hinge and tab actuator has to be carefully chosen. One of the best solutions was accomplished by kingfish. You can see the detail he invented to help located the actuator base on the transom in some of the photographs included with his article on his auxiliary motor installation.

The discussion of how to add trim tabs to the transom of a classic Boston Whaler really is worthy of its own entire message thread and discussion, and, in fact there are several prior discussions on this topic which will be of guidance to you if you choose to add trim tabs to your boat.

I would also consult with the manufacturer of the trim tabs for advice.

Here is a direct link to the image that shows the trim tab hinge and actuator mounting location in detail:

drd - I installed Bennett hydraulic tabs, but unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the installation.I mounted them with the small hinge plate vertical, bolted up to a curvature-compensating shim and through into the lower edge of the transom. I just followed Bennetts instructions, and other than the need to "carve" shims to compensate for the curved transom, all was straightforward. I opted for the shorter hydraulic cylinders to get clearance under the swim platform on the port side.

I mounted the hydraulic pump just forward of the Racor filter on the starboard side under the motor well hatch. If I were to do it again, however, I'd be tempted to mount the pump assembly in the center console, since the pump won't tolerate getting wet. Just requires a few more feet of tubing. Also, buy the tab position indicator system as well; it makes accurate tab positioning much easier.

The Bennett trim tabs were a factory option back in 1998. I would solicit someone that has them to e-mail you some pics. The whalerparts.com site lists the tabs as 9X9's. I can't find 9x9's on the Bennett site though. My guess is that ("Tabman"-Florids Sportsmand Forum) would be able to help put you on the exact parts you need without going through a dealer. Also I believe the stock location for the trim pump is in the lower, center, aft section of the console directely under the engine controls. There is a piece of wood glassed into the console that looks to be the right size for the pump.
