Guys I am still in the process of trying to buy an engine for my 1980 V-20 1980. What are your opinions of a 2000 Model 200 HP Evinrude ($7,300) with approximatley 150 hours, controls and prop? I am also looking at a 2003 yamaha 225 HP four stroke ($8,000) with controls, prop, 300 hours and a year warranty. I appreciate your input Mike |

My opinion... Both motors are rated too much HP for your boat. Your boat is rated for 180 hp MAX. The Evinrude Ficht of that year could have problems. A friend of mine had one, and then two, and then went to a 225 and had the same problems but not on the V-20... End of my opinion.... |

I have a '78 V-20 and Joe is correct, it's rated for 180 HP max. It's a light hull and overpowering it will give you handling problems. I put a 2002 Suzuki DF 115 on mine and it's almost got too much power. If the E-Tec 115 had been available I would have gone with it. Also, that hull really can't handle more than about 500 lbs on the transome without causing trim problems. |

Ok Thanks for your input guys. I was not planning WOT on the setup. Just considering a setup that would make the motor work/eat less. What do you guys think about twin 1996 115 hp mercs. Would that create a weight or power problem. What are their reputations. These have compression in the late 120's and early 130's on all cylinders. Additionally, these engines have 25" shafts. Maybe have to put on a couple jack plates. So many problems ... What think ye? Duff |

jimh has a breakdown in the reference section that explains how the max horsepower rating is determined. http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/ratedHP.html It even uses the V-20 Outrage for the example. Lkoks like a 200 is feasible. phatwhaler out. |

Thanks Phat I will look at the section. More than anything, I am on a budget and these engines came along. It is hard to make up my mind. Duff |

I have a 1978 V20 Outrage with a 1996 225hp 30" shaft Evinrude. I use a jack plate to get the engine up to proper height. The boat will (actually would because it was recently totaled) do 40+ at 3/4 throttle. It did sit a little low in the stern, but I also think it had some water in the hull. |

Well fellas, my 1979 "V"20 has a 2000 Evinrude FICHT 200 hp hanging on her transom,. I can cruise at 50 mph all day at 5000 rpms with 1000 rpms left to punch her to 60+ mph twisting a Stiletto 14.25 x 21 to 6100 rpms up on the 3rd set of holes. Yeh she sits a little low but absolutly no problems in the way she rides. My engine is putting out 222 hp at the prop. Your gonna love that engine & it will give you 5+ mpg at 3500 or less rpms & she burns 1 gallon of gas at salmon troll speed taking 3 hours & 20 minutes to get through that gallon of fuel. Sal |

Sal Have you had any problems with the evirude. Are there any recalls or standing issues that I need to know? Could you send me a pic of whaler with the rude on it? I think that he said that the engine had 80 hours + -. It will come with all controls and guages. Mike |

My bad on the last post. I have been looking at so many motors lately. The engine has 150 hours on it. Mike |

Guys What do you think of the quality of the 2004 and 2005 carbed johnsons. There is a guy that sales "new" unsold last year model engines for what appears to be reasonable prices. I still would like to get twins if I could get them at an affordable deal. A local yamaha dealer quoted me 21,000 installed for 115 four strokes. That is more than my car, wife , and pocket book can stand. I don't want to end up a "whaler divorcee." What think ye? Happy floatees! Balazul |

The 2000 big engines had upgrades of changing the bolts that hold the injectors in , changing the fuel line path & putting heavier covers on the spark plug wires,.....I'd call Bombardier & give them the serial # to be sure that was done. Alsosome of those engines including mine had weak or to hard of gears in the lower unit & they give out. If the whole lower unit has to be replaced, depending on the dealer it could run you $4,200. Other than that it's been a great engine for 1,500 hours. Not all of them had bad lower units, but only the shadow knows who's LU will give out............ If your not over 60 years old you don't know who the "Shadow" is, like Sea horse & Jim H& myself,....dinosaurs burning fossil fuel. Sal |

Sal I was talking to the seller of the 225 yami today and he said that by overpowering the listed hull rating I might be setting myself up for potential lawsuits should an accident occur. Do you know of anyone that would be willing to provide liability coverage for my Outrage? I appreciate his honesty but am a little disappointed. Mike |

My insurance company knows my boat is over powered but the also took into concideration my years as a Captain of a commercial; fishiong vessle on the Bering Sea for over 30 years & my racing years when I raced,...still the same insurance company. They know my boat is over powered & they still covered it. You might ask your insurance man what they will do if your over powered. Sal |

Thanks Sal I don't have your expierience level or a trusted insurance company. But I wont let that stop me yet... The motor is a "good deal" not to include a five hour drive away. I will continue to work on the problem. I may just be charged more on the premiums. We will see and I will keep you posted. Another problem is installation. I was told that many dealers will not install an overpowered engine due to liabialty problems. What is the difficulty level of an installation? I am a pretty good carpenter/mechanic. I would have to mount the engine to the transome and put in all of the controls. I have a hoist and the tools avialable. Additionally, I still have the original holes in the transome from the previously residing evenrude. I think that it was a 175HP. What is your opinion of this? Thanks again for your input. Mike |

You will have to mount it your self because no dealer will. I mounted mine with no problems but had to bring it to a dealer to time it because I didn't have the hardware yet. You most likely will need to bring it to a tech to be sure your timing & sync & link are right. No matter which engine you get, do "NOT" mount it all the way down on the first set of holes. Start with the second set & go to the third if she ] prop ] dosen't break loose. Sal |
