What is the maximum engine speed for a 1999 Mercury [of unspecified model and horsepower] on a 16 Dauntles set to wide open throttle? I am not a mechanic by any stretch. I do not have a trim guage now and I don't imagine they would set up the motor being able to surpass a max RPM.Thanks in advance.

Max RPM is determined by the prop you use, but don`t exceed it, or your motor will have a short life. At WOT, your rpm should be at the manufactuer's limits if you are using the right prop. This is determined buy testing.

Don't assume anything, you may be over or under the max rpm now. First you need to state the horsepower of your motor.

Second we need to know the prop you have now and what rpm you are running

Duhh, sorry brainfart 90-HP two-stroke, I'll have to check the prop.

The rating of the motor for its maximum crankshaft speed does not change with the boat. Generally you want to choose a propeller which will allow the motor to wind up to its maximum rated crankshaft speed when running with the typical load carried in the boat.

You can look up the rating for your motor in the owner's manual.

My 2002 90 2 stroke has a max operating rpm of 5000-5500 rpm. I have a 13x19 Rapture prop and raised engine that will pull 5400-5500 rpm on my 2002 Dauntless 160 giving a top speed of 37-39.5 mph depending on passengers and fuel load. With the stock 13x19 aluminum prop and stock engine height it was good for about 5200-5300 rpm well within the operating rpm. If it's not gone, there should be a label on the right lower cowl on your Mercury that shows max rpm range for that specific model.
Hope this helps

Chris

Cmarques found the sticker max rpm 5500.Thanks a bunch people. Now the prop it is either 18 or 13 and how do you read the rest of the numbers? Thanks again.

You probably have a 13" dia by 18" pitch prop if these numbers are on it. Generally the first number would be the diameter and the second would be the pitch.

The material of the prop, stainless or aluminum, and the design of the prop will also affect your WOT RPM's.
