There is a lot of talk over on scream and fly.com about this magazine article, from June 05, I think. Evidently the new generation 3 star 225 Optimax Pro XS smoked the 225 HO Evinrude and 225 Yamaha V Max competitors, by a whopping 6 MPH top end and getting best fuel economy also.

I have not seen the B&WB article, but wondered if anybody else here has. It appears to have been written by John Tiger, Jr. who participates at scream and fly. Many seem to indicate the Evinrude gear case was not up to the Mercury Torque Master (or is it Sport Master?) gear case and blame that for the poor Evinrude E-Tec showing.

I threw the mag away now, but basically the Merc had a pseudo racing gearcase while the Evinrude had the slow Lightning case. This allowed the Merc to run a faster prop and run like 2 inches higher, skewing the results.

Basically the Merc guys did a MUCH better job setting up their motor for the test than the BRP guys did. I think the Evinrude did better in holeshot, and possibly acceleration, but it did get smoked up top

Like LHG, I have not read the article, so it is hard for me to comment on the results.

Curiously, the Bass & Walleye Boat magazine website has a follow-up to the original article which explains the reasons that Mercury did so well:

The executive summary: Mercury had the best gear case so they won.

Forgot to add: when re-tested with the new gear case, the E-TEC had the top speed. When you are running at 85-MPH I guess the shape of the gear case becomes the very important. Not too many 85-MPH Boston Whaler boats, so probably not as much of a concern.

Even with Evinrude's new gearcase, not yet on the market, the article says the Optimax 225 XS was still faster, and easier to handle, since it only gained 2.5 MPH and was still in 3rd place in economy. And the Merc is only running 10% less cubes, 3.0 liters, vs the Evinrude 3.3+ liters.

What I can't figure out: why they don't post the original article on-line if they are posting the follow-up article.

When the 225-HP Shoot Out article first came out I tried to buy a copy of the magazine, but I could not find it on a news stand--even at Border's Books where the magazine rack has 1,500 titles.

I would really like to see that article. Anyone with a copy and a XEROX machine should think about running off two extra copies and mailing 'em to Larry and me!
