Does anyone have any experience with an early 1980's OUTRAGE 22 with a 150-HP Evinrude Ocean Pro outboard? I have found one for sale with this set up and the horsepower concerns me. Also the transom is very low. Would this make it a 20-inch transom/shaft?Regards Bob

Bob,The transom is low but it still takes a 25" shaft motor. 150 hp is not enough for that hull in my opinion. |

I have not had much chance to get the new to me 22'OR in the water yet. I did get to run the boat for a couple of hours, with most of that on plane. In think 150 would be pretty weak for this hull. The 200 Suzuki on my boat will reach a little over 40, which is plenty fast enough for me, but it does not get there super quickly. I have always felt that the published hull maximum horsepower rating is really what the hull was designed for. When lightly loaded, it will behave like a spirited sports car, when heavily loaded, it will handle the load with aplomb. Just my opinion, Doug Vazquez 1989 22 Outrage 1992 200 Suzuki |

Nothing wrong with a 150 on the 22-foot Whaler, as long as it's proped to turn 5400-5500 with a light load. You are probably talking a 14-15" pitch prop and OMC/Bombardier even makes a 13" SST for V6's.. Get it proped right and it will be fine. As long as you are happy with a 30 to 35-MPH boat there's no problem.. |

My 1991 OUTRAGE 22 has a pair of 130 Yamaha 2 strokes. I can get 37mph with a light load on just one of those engines, in an over-proped condition. You will do marginally better with a 150. Enough to get home - yes. Enough to be happy - no.Only buy it if the price reflects essentially zero value for the engine. |

The minimum horsepower to plane an OUTRAGE 22 is listed in the factory specifications as 90-HP. With a 150-HP motor you will be able to get on plane and have a top speed of about 35-MPH with a typical light load. The 22-foot hull likes to run on plane at about 25-MPH. With a 150-HP motor you will probably have to run the engine over 4,000 RPM to maintain the boat on plane. I think the Ocean Pro series came out after c.1993, so it sounds like that motor is newer than the boat. |

Thanks to all for the replies. Wow 90 hp min I would laugh if I heard it somewhere else! Yes the engine is a 1996 according to the tag on the mount. Regards Bob
If this rig only had a 225 optimax! |
