I picked up a used Pinpoint trolling motor for my '86 Montauk but I'm now affraid to mount it as I think it may be too short. I measured the shaft length from the bottom of the head unit to the middle of the prop and it's 41"-42". I've got an '86 Yamaha 90hp and an '04 Yamaha T8 on the transom, sometimes a 14gal livewell, and 3 batteries under the console.

I will typically be using the Pinpoint in calmer lakes and sloughs. I read someone comment on needing to fish from the bow to keep the prop underwater. Not sure how much that will be a pain. Any other comments would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to get a better feel for this before I start drilling holes.

Thanks!!!

I put a 42" shaft motorguide on my Montauk before I traded for my 22' cuddy and it worked fine. It was on a gator mount with a tiller handle.

I had this problem with a Minn Kota on my 220 Dauntless. The trolling motor prop would lift out of the water when more than one person was aft.

Minn Kota makes various shaft lengths and a dealer installed a longer one that works fine.

Perhaps a dealer for your motor could do the same.

I had a 42" shaft MinnKota on the bow of my former Montauk and it worked fine. If you opt for a longer shaft trolling motor, remember that whenever it is out the water, parallel to the transom, it will extend out farther from the side of the boat.
