I just finalized the GSA auction paperwork for a bare hull 90' 22 ft BW CC Guardian with dive door, notched transom & AWESOME alum frame trailer. I dont plan to restore the hull but will clean up the nicks & modify a few things. Primarily will become a work boat & part time rescue. POWER OPTIONS AT THIS TIME Twin 94 Yamaha 250 H-X Saltwaters are avail for $8k! BOTH are RH, 25" shafts, incl aftermarket SS wheels est $600 ea, no dings, exclusive saltwater use (sigh), maint documents incl both are turn-key, incl twin throttle & ambilicals. Obviously I will only mount one eng & use one throttle which leaves me with a spare eng. Other than comp test, is there anything else I should look for? I know the seller pretty well. I like this deal but, on the other hand, I dont like the idea of even NEEDING a spare eng. Local dealer quotes 225 verado $19,100 incl ALL the bells & whistles. thx all. someday I hope to return the favor. Michael K

I once heard a saying saying:I'd rather row a Yamaha than drive a Mercury. |

I have a 1999 250-HP Yamaha OX66 saltwater series which I am perfectly satisfied with. While shopping for that engine, I was warned away from models prior to 1997. They are reported to be extremely thirsty and have a tendency for heads to corrode because of saltwater not fully draining from the head after shutdown. Since then I have heard people talking down the 250-HP and talking up the 225-HP as being more reliable. I have no idea if any of it is true. |

hmmm, a rescue boat isnt going to save too many people if it wont start, and that extra engine in the garage is going to be totally worthless at that time. We are not talking about swapping kicker motors in five minutes after all. With a Verado you have to buy all the other garbage that comes with it like special controls, gauges, etc which EASILY run 2k. How about looking at a Suzuki four stroke (they have an excellent rep) or my favorite option, an E-Tec Evinrude. Even an Optimax should be cheaper, though I dont know if they are three star rated in the size you are looking at |
