I've got the repower itch, and I love 4 strokes.

The '87 Johnson 48SPL on it now seems to run fine, and I have a CMC 130 PT&T on there also, and an OMC tach.

But where I go (LOTW) you can get a looooong way from any marina and you can fish all day without seeing another boat.

iboats has a couple of Yamaha F50s for good prices (below NADA), with short warranties. One is a 2001 carbed engine, the other is a 2005 EFI. Both have PT&T. I think they are off lease.

Questions that I don't have answers to (yet):

What would be a reasonable amount I might expect to get for the Johnson, including controls and tach, and for the CMC PT&T? Should I offer them seperately or as a package?

What should I expect to pay for controls (side mount) and multi-function tach for one of the Yamahas (I am leaning hard to the EFI engine)?

I guess shipping would run me around $400. Even the F50s are too heavy for me to manage by myself. Could I get it mounted and rigged for a couple hundred?

Finally, I had and dearly loved a Suzuki DF70 on my Montauk. I know about the Yamahas only what I read in the brochures. Who has experience with this engine, carbed and/or EFI?

Any other thoughts? No, I won't buy a new engine, including an ETEC.

I like the way Bob thinks.

What you should get for the 48- Depends on condition and the buyer. There are some people out there who love these motors, there are those who shun them. If it runs well and is in good shape I'd probably offer you $400 then $500-$550 depending on the shape of the CMC. My father just sold his perfect running 1990 Evinrude V4 90 for $1100 with no controls or tach.

Yamaha side mount control (703) is in the $402 list price.
Multifunction tach is listed at $422
I will have a side mount control for sale in July when I switch to a binnacle control style. It is circa 2005, looks and works brand new, and will work on any Yamaha. I'm thinking $200 is fair.

Mounting costs usually run between $80-$120. The rigging can get expensive, and if you have the experience or some technical knowhow, you could do it yourself. It really is no big deal.

I rigged a carbed Yamaha 4stroke 50 on a fellow's Sport last Summer and he absolutely loves it. However, if you have an opportunity to get your hands on a 60hp, I would suggest it. The motor specs. are completely the same except you get another 10hp, which, on the 15' can make a substantial difference with 3-5 passengers.

Good Luck

Several years ago I was considering a re-power. I had a pair of 1987 outboards--in fabulous fresh water condition I have to say. In talking to my outboard motor dealer, he assured me that it would be easy to sell these motors, and he was very optimistic about the price they would bring.

I don't know if that enthusiasm was born of his desire to sell me a new pair of motors, or if it reflected reality. Ultimately I did not re-power, so I don't know if his predicted strong value for my older motors would have been obtained.

But I mention this to give you similar encouragement in selling your 1987 outboard. When you look at the price of new motors, there is a strong upward pull exerted on the price of used motors.

[What the heck is LOTW?]

LOTW is Lake Of The Woods, Jim. On the MN-Ontario border.

In my opinion the greatest multispecies fishing hole on the planet.

JB, check around on the internet at what used engines go for. I am constantly amazed at the high prices they bring. I think you can get more than what you think for your old outboard. I'm sure it'll fetch $1,000 +.

For about $50 you could rent an auto engine hoist for a day to remove the Johnson and hang the Yamaha yourself. That's what I did when I swapped a Johnson 48 SPL with a Yamaha 70 on my 15 Super Sport a couple of years ago.

I had a 40hp motor shipped to me(MN to North Carolina) on Estes truck for $100.
Just put a piece of carpeting on a wood pallet and strap the motor to it, controls and all. I had it delivered to a friends store that had a fork lift....very easy.
