How are these Evinrude E-TEC motors for trolling? I can't stand trolling my 90-HP two-stroke due to the smoke and rough idle. Any fouling [of the E-TEC motors when operating at idle speeds for extended periods]?

I've not yet trolled mine, however my old Merc 150 would load up in the 45 minute no wake-zone to the lake. By the time I got back to the ramp or to the pierhead, she was ready to be opened up...smoking quite a bit, coughing and stumbling...

With the 90 HP E-TEC there is no problem. I would think that the OptiMax and E-TEC are fine options if you need lighter weight and have to troll on the main engine.

The Evinrude E-TEC motor uses a stratified combustion mode at low speeds. This gives amazing improvement in fuel economy. There is no smoke. There is no plug fouling. The motors will idle at 500-RPM. They are amazing two-stroke motors--nothing like what you are accustomed to think of a two-stroke.

Folks really need to run a DFI 2-stroke, whether it be an E-TEC or something else, for a little while to appreciate the significant improvement in running quality of a DFI 2-stroke over the carbureted or EFI 2-strokes. These engines start simply by turning the key to engage the starter motor. There is no throttle or choke manipulation. The fuel consumption improvement at idle and low engine speeds is significant, 5 to 10 times better in a DFI 2-stroke outboard. The power band is smoother.

Having lived with 1st generation DFI 2-strokes for the last couple of years and knowing the improvements that have been made that are now embodied in the E-TEC, I think Jim sums it up well when he says they are "nothing like what you are accustomed to think of a two-stroke".

I must be lucky. I run a (rebuilt by the previous owner)1980 Johnson 100HP on my Sakonnet and can idle all day with no smoke after the first minute or so. I have trolled half way across Tampa Bay and only had it sputter for a few seconds when getting up on plane.

Happy trolling,

Bob on Tampa Bay

Thanks all. The local guy here wants $7500 plus another $1000-ish to install. Sound reasonable?
