I am currently in the process of installing side bunks (5 foot carpeted) as I have been having a problem gouging the gel coat on my back 12 inch roller. It seems if I don't hit the roller perfectly, the metal edge in which the stainless roller "axle" slides through gouges the round bottom of my 15 center console bow. I think I am not sinking the trailer deep enough, and also intend to snug the side bunks up to the boat side so there is no room for error when I center the boat on the trailer. Anybody have any pointers or suggestions on 1)installation of the side bunks, and 2)advice on how to prevent further gouging of gel coat by my trailer roller? thanks in advance-k

The link I posted is a mail order store, I highly recommend them. Excellent service/prices.

Kglinz, I just went through two complete sets of the black rollers in 18 months. I am going to try the Stoltz-brand next.

You defiately want to use poly rollers (non-scuff rollers). They're the yellowish rollers. They won't leave marks on the hull and they come in all different shapes and sizes, including the shape recommended in this thread.

If you miss the roller with one of these you still have the keel dragging along the beam of your trailer and now need to lift the entire boat up onto the roller. I had wondered about adding a piece of wood, roughly level with the edges of the roller on either side and cut so the top surface would be level so if you missed, the boat would ride on this wood and could just be pushed sideways into the groove of the roller.

Took the boat out today for some striper fishing. I discovered that the side bunks really help guide the boat on the trailer, I also discovered that I had not been sinking my trailer deep enough. It was very windy coming back in, the side bunks were nice to have! Thanks again for all the help-k
