[Pointed to some data he collected and posted elsewhere. Glen was the first person to obtain an ENERTIA propeller for testing as a courtesy from Mercury. The data was presented as a JPEG image which is no longer available on-line. The data has been transcribed to text below by Tom W. Clark. See his reply. This data was collected on a heavy 32-foot offshore v-hull boat with twin 250-HP Mercury VERADO motors. That boat, its hull form, and its weight are significantly different than classic Boston Whaler boats.--jimh.]

Looks encouraging. I'll be curious to see if they grip as well as the Rev 4s.

The data presented in tabular form as a graphic is perhaps better viewed as text. [See the data converted to text below.] In the meantime, I see that the most significant difference in speed with the new ENERTIA propellers occurred at wide-open throttle. The new propellers added as much as 4-MPH to the boat speed. However at lower speeds the new propeller was about the same or slower than the other propellers tested.

The most interesting thing is the propeller was able to be turned as much as 500-RPM faster at wide-open-throttle. That is a very interesting situation. It seems like the propeller must be about the same pitch as the others, as the increase in boat speed was more or less in proportion to the increase in engine speed. Normally you would expect to see an engine speed increase if the pitch were lower, but, in this case, the engine not only goes faster but so does the boat.

The thinner blades of the ENERTIA must be easier for the engine to turn in the water, yet at the same time they are providing thrust as effectively as other propellers. The result seems to be the engine can turn the the ENERTIA propeller faster than another style of the same pitch!

Keep the data coming. It will be interesting to see more results.

Thank you for taking the time to gather and provide this data. It is very interesting.

I like the idea of the Enertia propellers being lighter. I think many of us are put off by the clunk we get when shifting into gear with some of the Enertia's cousins.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing I note is the increase in RPM with the Enertia. It seems as if the proper comparison would be a 21" Enertia to the three other 19" pitch propellers.

I suspect the Enertia spun higher for a couple reasons. One, the blades are supposed to be thinner and thus offer less resistance. Two, the diameter is smaller that the others and thus I assume it has less blade area.

Of the four propellers tested, the Mirages returned the best fuel economy at 1.96 MPG at 33.4 MPH. By the looks of the photo those are older Mirages, not Mirage Pluses. Is that correct?

I also note that the Mirage has a fuel burn at WOT of 58 GPH whereas all the other propellers, regardless of RPM are put down with a fuel burn of 56 GPH. This strikes me as odd. If an outboard is working as hard ass it can, I would expect it to be drawing the same amount of fuel. Why do you suppose there is this anomaly?

To pick up a speed increase of 3 or 4 MPH of top speed on a boat of that size and weight is pretty amazing. The Enertia definitely lived up to its hype there.

What is interesting is that the Enertia has an elephant ear blade shape similar to the swept back Viper design. I saw one at the Mercury booth at the NYC boat show in January and remember thinking that it its overall outline resembled the Viper, particularly with the pointy blade tips. The Viper produces very good top speeds as compared to other propellers but its performance is weak in the mid-range. The Enertia seems to match the mid-range of other good mid-range peforming propellers while at the same time being able to take advantage of the high speed capabilities that the swept back blade design seems to provide.

Interestingly, BRP had their new Rebel at their booth at the same NYC boat show and I also remember thinking at that time that it's shape very much resembled the Mercury Mirage. It's performance seems to be comparable from what I can tell.

I do notice that the ENERTIA propeller hub design has the angled support between the inner and outer hud, and that these seem to form a vortex-like arrangement which might affect the flow of the exhaust gases and water from the exhaust port.

I noticed this same sort of construction in the REVOLUTION4. I observed:

"...the connecting walls in the hub were shaped in a spiral so that the exhaust passing through them would be twisted. Considering the speed at which the propeller was rotating, perhaps this was done more for structural reasons than to spin the exhaust. Giving this design some more thought, perhaps the spiral of these walls is to act as a rotary pump to pull the exhaust out of the hub? This might help reduce exhaust back pressure."

I cannot tell for certain if the ENERTIA has this same arrangement. The MIRAGE propeller pictured deos not seem to have such construction.

I will see if I can borrow an Enertia propeller when my dealer gets them. I'll take some pictures and try to better show the blade shape. Photographing a propeller to reveal something of the shape of the blade can be difficult.

Also, I was surprised by the elephant-ear profile of the blade on the ENERTIA.

the mirage in the pic was just an old set I had - the data is done with the current merc mirage plus...

don't start teraring apart the data too much - I do not attempt to be the supreme Mag testerr and all the tests were done with myself only. The mirage was done early on (mar 04) and I've learned to trim up a bit more on the other three which were done more recently. So I would guess the diff between the moirage and the enertia is more like 350 diff than 500....

someone else get out there and try this - it's a mjor undertakeing....

a freind of mine that has borrowed my props befores has a mckee and an etec - we will be testing the eneteria on the etec against the viper in mid june or so...stay tuned...

Yes, I know, it is a major undertaking to thoroughly test a set of propellers and that is why I thank you Glen for going to this effort.

I have tested six different pairs on my own boat and have at least four more pairs I want to test. Every one of these propellers was tested across the full spectrum of engine speeds with data recorded on this simple chart:

I would be happy to test a pair of 19" Enertias and give a full report. Anyone care to loan me a pair for a week?

If you look at the grids I have done you realize one thing:
the differences are pretty minor. IMO, all Merc props are really good...and I'm sure many from BRP and others are too.

You really have to be "into boating " to go thru this..

we all need to get a life...

I'll give you my set of Entertia's in late June - have at it!

Hello all,

I have a Mckee 22 Freedom with 250 Etec. It came with a 19 Viper and seems to cruise at about 32-33 burning around 10-11.5gph depending on load, current, etc. Top end is around 51-52 at 5600-5650rpm (again depending on conditions, etc). Other than some minor issues it has been a good motor so far (crank position sensor X 2 and early fouled plugs).

Glen allowed me to run the 19 Tempest against my 19 Viper. Remarkably the blade area is fairly close and geometry looks comparable though when you compare blade length the Tempest has more rake. Top end and cruise arent much different but the Tempest handles way better. It took much more trim than the Viper, held plane at least 5mph lower than the Viper, lost no ground when turning even when trimmed widely out. Frankly it trumps the Viper with respect to handling. The only reason that I have not bought one for myself is that I would like to give the Enertia and the Rebel a try before I bite.

I had the chance to look at the Enertia at the Miami show and the blade area looks huge. Yes, it appears to have a great deal of rake like the Viper but the blade shape is more round especially at the leading edge. There also appears to be more cup. I have not been able to try a Rebel yet because BRP does not have a demo prop program and results with the Rebel have been mixed. In some situations the Rebel outperforms the Viper and vice versa (example: the 26 Key west with twin 150's at the show apparently did not do well with the Rebels so they fitted it with Vipers).

I simply think that Mercury has continued with propeller development when OMC/BRP was stagnant and now Mercury is pretty far ahead (IMHO).

One thing I have learned from many years of experience...to find the best prop for your application, try, try, try different props. No two props are the same out of the box. As a rule, Merc does a fine job with their props. But there can be one hell of a difference between how your boat performs with a HighFive, than a Trophy Plus, or a Mirage Plus or a Michigan Rapture.
And in a few cases, I've found Merc's plain Jane Black Max aluminum to be the best performer...go figure. The "perfect prop" for your application is out there....you just have to "find it"!!

You are so right. I have been surprised a few times and am trying to be as thorough as possible in testing different props on my boat. Here is a list of props I am currently looking to borrow for testing (hint, hint):

One 21" Laser II (I have one now)

I have already tested the following:

You are entirely right about testing. I have to say that when I compared the Tempest to the Viper before putting it on the boat I did not expect a difference, yet the Tempest has much better handling.

Interestingly, at the Miami show one of the Merc guys did not even think the Tempest was worth trying which makes me wonder that the Enertia is really going to offer a significant difference.

I am fairly sure that if I were to get a Rebel I would need an 18p to be perfect (which may not be available). The Enertia comes in even sizes and my estimation right now is that a 20p will be the way to go. We will see soon!

Vipers have fairly thick blades relative to Mercury propellers. Also, the pitch designations of one manufacturer don't always translate directly to the same pitch designation by a different manufacturer. That's why you need to try the props out.

Does anyone know if these props are going to be available for smaller (40HP) motors? Or are they only for the 'big boys' toys? <grin>

the Enteria box says they are made for 135 and above outboards and alpha/bravo strnedrives....but I'm sure in time the X7 metal will make it down to some smaller sizes...however real small outboards don't really need the enhanced performace of big bore stuff, I would think....and price comes much more into play....don't think anyone will want to play $500 for a 60 hp bigfoot application....

On a 40-HP motor, an aluminum propeller works fairly well. The high strength of steel is not needed in lower horsepower applications. Because of this, most applications using a 40-HP motor do not require a specialized propeller such as a Mercury ENERTIA. I would be surprised if they begin manufacture of them in sizes suitable for a 40-HP motor due to what I anticipate would be miniscule demand and very low sales volume.
