I know elaelap has a 115 4 stroke that he is happy with. How would a Yamaha 115 2 stroke Saltwater Series perform on an 18 Outrage? Application would be a "kid" boat. Not looking to over power it - want a safe boat that the kids (teens) will be able to run around in - skiing and tubing - but not overpowered. If they can run 40mph with good mid range, that would be great. Personal experience appreciated.

Thanks. – Bud

I have a 1989 18' Outrage with a similiar vintage Yamaha 130 2 stroke (basically the same engine as the 115). I'm on the Long Island Sound and am extremely happy with the combination. The engine has more than enough hp to pull a slalom up (granted I'm only 160lbs so a heavier skier may have a tougher time but I did have 6 people in the boat while it pulled me from a dead stop) and plenty of strength for tubing. As for speed... while I'm guessing you're hoping it's top-end is lacking because the "kidsboat" factor, this far from the case. I don't have much in the way of electronics so I can't quote speeds but I can tell you that it's a rare day on the Long Island Sound that I'm able to run the boat wide open.

I have the exact same set-up on my 1987 18'Outrage that you are discussing but my engine is a 1987 Yamaha 115hp 2 stroke.

I purchased the boat in September 2002 and my Yamaha 115hp runs as strong as can be. The engine had a new lower unit installed by prior owner (this happens to be a counter-rotation or left hand lower unit).

Other than a carb re-buid last year, I haven't had any complaints or problems with the engine or this setup on my 18' and we do plenty of skiing and tubing.

My top-end is about 40 mph with perfect water/wind conditions and 37+ in any condition.

I run a 13 1/4 x 17 stainless Stiletto (again this engine happens to be a left hand rotation).

We continue to use our boat for plenty of waterskiing and tubing and have had no complaints with the 115HP.

However, if the boat has a full load of fuel and people the skiier has to be strong physically and in his/her skills to get up on a slalom ski (this is the only place where the additional HP might be helpful if your kids aren't strong skiiers or if you are constantly with a full load of adults when skiing). If you're using 2 skis there is plenty of torque to get you up even with a full load of fuel and adults on board.

Fortunately my kids are small and I grew up waterskiing so this lack of torque hasn't forced the purchase of a new engine. So as long as my 1987 engine keeps running as good as it has been I will stick with it.

If you want any further details about the setup of the 18' Outrage feel free to drop me an e-mail I would be glad to return the favor that so many other members of this site have given me.
