Just upgraded from Montauk to Outrage. 1987 has original Evinrude 200hp motor. Seems to run o.k.(typical of the era) Compression is good. My mechanic just called me and wants me to look at a 1997 Evinrude 175h.p. he is rebuilding. He's a trusted mechanic. My questions: are all 1997 Evinrude 175's the Fitch type? I'm pretty sure he said it had carbs. Where all these OMC's of this era trouble?Any thoughts on whether it's worth $3,000 to "upgrade"? Or do I dump some money into making sure everything is running great on the old 200? Any thoughts on the pros and cons would be appreciated. Thanks for all the great advise I've been getting. This place is awesome. Mike

If it is a ficht, I would not go there. If it is carbed, I wouldn't go there either. The ficht for 97 to 2001 is not a motor I would have. Also, I wouldn't take a gas guzzler, when there are so many other choices. I would wait and save for a fuel injected motor, whichever catches your eye and you have a good dealer close by to support it. |

Thanks for the reply. What is the issue with carbs? Aren't they less maintainence and less expensive to repair? And, do you know if Evinrude made a non-Fitch 175 in 1997? I won't be able to see the motor until next week. I'm told the graphics are: white engine with blue/ green lettering. Last, if the motor that came with the boat (1987 Evinrude V6 200 hp) is running well what sort of things should I watch for. Wasn't that a pretty good motor? |

Carbs are Ok, just use alot of fuel. 97 was the first year for Ficht, some horsepowers were ficht, most were carbed. For me fuel economy is important, if it isn't to you, buy as you mentioned. |

Have your trusted mechanic do a leak down test on your current engine to see its current condition. If the test is good then have the carbs redone. Plugged carbs are the main cause of burnt pistons and seizures. After this you should have a good motor that will last long enough until you can afford an E-Tec |

If the 200 is running good whay spend any money now you are going into hybernation for the winter anyway aren't you? If the 200 is needing some work and the 175 evinrude is NON fict carb oceanpro than I would say it is a good choice for the 20. But than again a new motor for 3 or 4 times that amount in the long run might not be a bad idea either. |

Mike, it doesn't appear that you are interested in a 4-stroke engine, but I thought I'd put up my 2-cents worth regarding my set-up. I have a 1987 Outrage on which I installed a new Yamaha F150 and I am extremely, EXTREMELY pleased with its performance. I average about 3.5 statute miles per gallon, sometimes more and my top speed at 5800 rpm is about 37 knots......this is with the boat loaded down quite heavy at 4200 pounds (lots of water for bait tank, full fuel, gear, passengers, ect.)...... |

The only thing preventing me from considering a 4 stroke is my budget. My goal is to upgrade to that in a few years. In the meantime, I am trying to figure out the least expensive, reliable performance. I'm glad to hear the 150h.p. is enough for the OR 20. Thanks, Mike |
