What years did Yamaha make the 115 four stroke models for Mercury? Are the 2005, 2006 Yamaha and Mercury models the same? Does Mercury now make their own 115 4 stroke? Choosing between only these two models and manufactures, ares there any significant differences?

Thanks,

Troutman767

All of the four-stroke motors in the 115-HP range that Mercury sold, up until just very recently, were made with power heads purchased from Yamaha. For many years, Mercury and Yamaha collaborated in the design and manufacture of four-stroke outboard motors. That arrangement ended a few years ago, and the two companies parted on somewhat contentious terms. Yamaha tried to end a contract to supply engines; Mercury took court action to force them to comply. This was fallout from the Mercury complaint to the United States International Trade Commission about unfair pricing of outboard motors imported from Japan. (There is extensive coverage of this in the archives.)

The Mercury Veradito motor has just gone into production this year. It is an all-Mercury motor, designed and built in Wisconsin. The first models of this motor were seen as part of new boat packages beginning in May of 2006. I have not yet seen any mention of these motors being available as loose motors for use in a re-power.

As for the older motor design and choosing between a Yamaha 115-HP four-stroke or a similar Mercury version, this is more a matter of dealer preference. If I recall, the Mercury motor may have had fuel-injection during some years while the Yamaha was still using a carburetor system. The Mercury motor will have electrical fittings designed to interface with Mercury accessories; the Yamaha will be built to connect to Yamaha accessories. The midsections and lower units are different, too.

If you want to learn more about the Veradito 115-HP motor, I wrote extensively about them in

There you will find a great deal of information about the motor. (And this was available here on CONTINUOUSWAVE months before it appeared on the Mercury website or on other boating enthusiast websites.)

Jim......the F115 Yamaha has always been a EFI system since it was introduced in 1999. The smaller 4-stroke version F75,F80,F90 and F100 were all carbed until model year 2005 when Yamaha went EFI down to F50hp.

The "Mercaha 115 EFI" is a Yamaha dressed powerhead on a Mercury driveshaft housing, clamp bracket and lower unit assembly. There is a special "harness adapter" to mate the Yamaha wiring harness to the Mercury external wiring harness/control box/keyswitch assembly. The Mercaha was never SmartCraft ready.
The "New" 115 EFI FourStroke is indeed "all Mercury" from top to bottom...and is SmartCraft ready.
