Well, I'm getting tired of raising the engine--3rd set of holes--for 6 months that I fish on the Sacramento river, then lowering it for a better bite in sloppy waters--2nd set of holes--when I fish the ocean for 6 months. I just got off the phone with Bob's Machine shop in Fl, and ordered the "MJ5 HD" manual Jack Plate for $269 for the heavy duty--"HD" = heavy duty--engines to 300 hp. The "MJ5"--not the HD--is $249 for engines up to 200 hp. I know my engine is a 200 hp, and the regular "MJ5" is rated "TO" 200 hp, but what the hell, for the extra $20. I ordered the "HD" which is 1/2" aircraft Aluminum and rated to 300 hp, as my engine is putting out 222 hp.
My boat has the tendency to porpoise a bit at slower speeds unless trimmed in pretty good, and was assured the Jack Plate with the 5" setback should cure that, or certainly reduce it, plus allowing me to raise or lower the engine much easier as it weighs 504-lbs. I'm not looking for more rpms, just an easier way to lift or lower the engine for different types of water conditions. I have the same Jack plate on my 15 Sport and absolutely love it. I will post the results of the porpoising as soon as I am able to test her. The plate wont be here until next week some time.
Also, last week I took the boat for a 10 mile, one way ride, because it has been at Half Moon Bay--ocean 65 miles away--since last May and I hadn't run her in 4 months, as I was fishing the Sacramento river in my 15' Sport. I got to where I wanted to go--near fairfield--and turned around to head back. I never went over 3500 rpms in Montezuma Slough and came upon a small boat on the anchor fishing. I slowed down to idle and when I gave her a bit of throttle to get back on plane, the check engine light and alarm came on. I pulled the hood and looked and looked and found nothing loose, yet it wouldn't start--no fire --. Now I'm 10 miles away from the harbor in Montezuma Slough, so I fired up the 1980--15 hp Johnson and proceeded "AGAINST" a strong out-,going current for 2 solid hours at about 1/2 to 2/3 throttle. I never run the kicker at WOT, because it's a 20" long shaft that's mounted off to the side of a dead center 25" transom--extra long transom --.
Got home and put the boat in the driveway and hooked up the computer to the engine, and ran every test the factory manual said to run for a no spark situation, and at the end of the tests it says, the water cooled EMM went South on you,--no it didn't get hot today, but if you remember it got warm about 2 - 3 years ago and I drilled out the cooling passage that was clogged with either salt or silt from the river and it ran fine until now--.
Pull the engine computer off and call DFI--direct fuel injection --industries, and they say, mail it, we know why it has no spark. I sent it to their office or work place in Alabama, and 2 days after they received it, they called and said it's been rebuilt, and the charges are $689. compared to over $1,200--new--from the dealer, and you will have it in 3 days--Friday --so I'll put it in and fish this weekend, and when the Jack plate comes in next week I'll install it, and hopefully be set for Salmon season when it opens in April.
In the mean time I'll fish for Stripers and Sturgeon on the river. Sorry for the long post but, now you know the rest of the story. Sal
