My father is giving me his old c.1980 25-HP Johnson to use as a kicker [on an 22-foot boat]. I have a motor bracket for a kicker on the back which is rated for a 20-HP. I think it will be ok since this OMC motor comes in 20-HP in this size. Is this too much power for a kicker [on a 22-foot boat]? I am more worried about weight and good fuel milage. Would the standard OEM 12-inch pitch propeller work? I am going to use it as a back up and for troling for King Fish. Has anyone used a motor this size as a kicker and switched to a smaller one?

Thanks
Archie

accissidy-- The 25 hp is fine. My friend runs a 25hp Merc
on a 25' Dusky as a trolling/kicker and it works swimmingly.
We killed plenty of kings 3-4 weeks ago off Port Canaveral,FL.
He has been so happy with the Merc that he bought a new 25hp Johnson off the Florida Sportsman web site last week-- it's
going on a second offshore boat. A couple years ago, his main engine died yet the 25hp got him home-- the usual 9.9hp would
have been a stretch from 20+ miles out. 2nd hand opinion. David

Archie - since you can't beat free, I'm sure it will work fine, though it is overkill for a 22. An 8 or 9 hp kicker with a sailboat prop (bigger blades, lower pitch - designed for higher thrust at displacement speeds) will push a 22 to hull speed no problem. And if you can't plane - which a 25 won't do on a 22 - then hull speed is all you are going to get - maybe 1 or 2 mph more at wot, but really all that will happen is that the stern will squat down and the noise and fuel consumption will go way up.

Other than the fact that a 25hp will be thirstier than a 8 or 9hp, and somewhat biggger on the transom, I don't see any reason it won't work. The free factor will make up for a lot of fuel.

David R, I would also strongly suggest that a 9hp will get you home from 25 miles out just as well as a 25 - both about 4 hours.

Plot- Maybe so. I guess it is foolish to pay the
extra bucks for the 25hp plus the weight differential. D

The 25 will work fine. Here are my suggestions:

- Mount it directly to the transom, and use bolts in the lower holes. You will hate having it mounted on a scissor-type bracket, even the good quality OMC unit. I had one on my Montauk with just a 15, and was always frustrated with the motor bouncing around. Also, all the hinge points on the bracket wore out quickly. Finally, even with the spring assist, it's a real pain lifting that motor up and down every time you deploy it. It's also dangerous hanging over the transom in a rolling sea.

- Move the batteries to the opposite side of the boat from where you have mounted the kicker.

- Consider an automatic oil mixing device (Accu-Mix) if your main engine has VRO, and run the kicker off the main fuel tank.

- Get a low pitch (a.k.a. sailboat) prop. This will allow the motor to get the boat to hull speed at a lower rpm, and will save you some fuel.

- If you do a lot of trolling, rig it with a dual binnacle control, so that throttle and shift can be handled from the helm. If it has electric start, add a keyswitch on the console as well.

- Steer it with a tie bar. I prefer the front mounted model from Panther Marine (about $50 for the stainless steel unit from Cabelas) over the awkward aft mounted EZ-Steer. Nothing easy about those things.

Here's a great artcile written by our own Joe Kriz that shows all of these details, with photos:

FWIW, my 15 h.p. Merc had plenty of thrust to get my Outrage 22 8 miles back to port in windy conditions a few years ago. It took a little over an hour.

IMHO, the engine is overkill. You will get only a marginal speed increase over a 10hp engine, and will now be lugging around a very large kicker.

The experience of kingfish with a 8-HP auxiliary motor on a Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 22 has been extremely good. There is considerable evidence that 8-HP is adequate power to propel a 22-foot Boston Whaler boat. The high-thrust and low-pitch propeller enhances the performance.
