How can I find information on the outboard that I have? It is a Yamaha 40HEO. My mechanic and I cannot find this model anywhere! He called in Canada, and he called in Mexico. Apparently I have an outboard from the twilight zone!

I know that evinrude has a freeze plug on the engine block, the freeze plug has the serial number on the engine which will give you the year and model...good luck

That is the model. There's no listing of it.

Pierce, the code for your motor, the 40 HEO or 40 EHO breaks down like this:
40 = the horse power
E = manual tilt with electric start
H = Tiller handle
O = 1990

If it is a four stroke, the 40 would be preceded by the "F" designation.

Look at the link below for more information

hpoe this helps,

A model number of 40 EHO makes more sense than a model number of 40 HEO.

How about double checking that sequence of letters? Is it really 40 HEO?

It says on the metal tag on the side if the mounting bracket, 40HEO. It is not a tiller model. No it is not a converted tiller model. Could the tag be wrong? I'll try to post pics. This is very frustrating!

BTW, it is a 2 stroke Precision Blend 40hp. We think it is from the mid 80's.

Pierce, the 40 HEO designation doesn't make sense when you look at the Yamaha model designation chart below. Maybe the tag has been altered or replaced or who knows what. I can't figure it out. Maybe you can contact the original owner to help you sort it out. This chart did not really come out right but as an example my Yamaha outboard is an F 150 TXRC. Anyway, hope this helps and good luck.

The year designator code "H" for 1987 is consistent with the premise that the motor is "from the mid-80's."

That's what is driving me crazy about this Ron. When I get the boat back home,I'll look into this harder. Heck I'll even take a picture of the tag and try to post it on photobuckets. Thanks for the replies guys. Happy boating!

I agree with you Jim but the year designator code is usually the last letter in the sequence, unless it was different in the 1980s model years.

Well guys, it looks like part of my outboard ID mistery is solved. I googled Yamaha 40 HEO, and came up with links to Europe and a guy trying to sell his in New Zealand. The story from the guy I bought the boat from is that the motor came from a tender that was on a fishing boat that wasn't used much. I'm guessing that this was a large boat, and that it was bought over seas and brought here.

[Unclear article deleted. Please do not revive three year old discussions unless there is some extraordinarily compelling reason.--jimh]
