Well, it's happened! I have the new Honda BF90D installed and running on A Little Madness. The "D" is the designator for the 2007 version with the Fuel Injection, VTec, Lean Burn, BLAST, etc. vs. 2006 with Carbs. I have the Honda 3 blade S/S prop with 15 pitch. There is next to no break-in on this motor. With the supplier on board we kicked it flat-out to 5800 rpm's (Tech rep said top-end is actually 6300). I thought our 17 Montauk was going to flip over backwards the bow got up so fast! Everything they say about the new "Blast" for an improved hole-shot is TRUE! WOW! Anyway, I know I'm going to be baraged with technical questions on performance, etc., and I will do my best, but understand and bear with me....this is my first power boat (yes I'm an ex-blowboater) and it came with a very tired Yamaha 90, so this weekend was incredible. A few other quick notes. 2 Gel-Cell batteries & Selector switch moved to a starboard reinforced center console floor was very smart. Didn't have to change the waterline and the bullet does not rest in the water. Sea Star hydraulic steering is wonderful. The Lowrance LMS-527cDF iGPS is incredible. At 40 mph I get accurate depth readings in the ICW. With the 27 gal Tempo we've got great cruising ability as well to enjoy. Don't know yet how to post pictures here, but once I do I will get some out.

Bottom Line - IT WAS WORTH THE 9 WEEKS WAIT!

Thanks for the report. I am pleased to learn that there will be a distinctive model name for this new engine.

What is the top speed with the motor trimmed out at WOT and does the boat have bottom paint?

I'm sure others would also like to see a full performance report at specific engine RPM.

The new BF90 sounds like a good match to the classic Montauk.

Perry,
I don't regret to say that so far, My Bride & I have just been enjoying being back on the salt water, so I don't have any performance data yet. Yes, the bottom is painted as we will be keeping the boat in the water most of the year. Haulout will be mainly for service & cleaning, then back in she goes. As soon as I get data I will post it, but be patient....after all, it is a pleasure boat first & foremost.

I ordered a BF90D today for my '93 Montauk. Finally got tired of the 90 Yahama that is currently on the boat for its reliability, so I called a dealer friend to order the Honda. Neither of us was sure of the transom height on the Montauk. The BF90D is offered in 20" and 25" lengths. My boat is stored at a lake 40 miles to my west and the dealer is 100 miles to my east at the coast and I want to pick up the Honda tommorrow. My dealer has both sizes in stock and I'm trying to avoid going to the boat for measurements prior to getting the motor. Also if anyone knows the correct cable length that would be appreciated as well. Can anyone advise me?

Boom Hower,

You want a 20" shaft length motor for your Montauk

Sorry about not responding sooner but my high speed modem at home is toast & of course no one can get there till Tues. Anyway, yes, 20" shaft is correct. I don't know about a 93 Montauk, but on my 89 we used the top hole on the mounting bracket into the top hole on the transom. The choice then was to drill 2 new holes in the transom to fit the bracket holes or in the mounting bracket to fit the existing bottom holes on the transom. My dealer chose to drill new holes in the bracket and it worked out well. I'm still trying to work out the whole picture on the internet thing as I've taken right many of the evolution of our restoration. As soon as I figure it out I'll get some out here. Patience please.

I have setup a personal page with 10 pictures of the renovation project. [Put a link to your website in your profile so people can find it--jimh.]

A performance update. As you know the new 2007 Honda BF90D has Fuel Injection, VTEC, and the BLAST (Boosted Low Speed Torque)to improve the hole shot. The other day I took it out with my wife and from a dead stop in the ICW I slammed it and put her in her seat and the boat up on a plane faster than I ever dreamed with it trimmed almost all the way down. In no time (couldn't time it and manage the boat at the same time) I had her up to 5,800-RPM and 40-RPM, and I don't think I had her trimmed right. Could have brought the bow up a bit more. Remember, I have two new gel-cells in the center console and a 28 gal tempo under the seat. Probably had 20 gal of fuel at the time, it was calm winds and an ebb tide, perfect for a test. I know this isn't as scientific as some would like, but it's a start.
