I recently bought a new 2006 13) SPORT with a four-stroke 40-HP Mercury engine. I have great difficulty getting it to plane with four people on board. This past weekend, we had four on board, and max RPM were 3,800, and boat would not plane out. I waited for a wake from a passing boat, timed my approach, and surfed it's wake and it came up on plane and stayed there at rpms from 3900- 5500. I'm considering re-propping with a stainless prop.Does anyone know what pitch I should use? It's so close to getting on plane now, I just need a little more torque. I was even able to create my own wake and surf it to get on plane with 4 people on board.

Unable to plane with four even when the boat is powered to its maximum horsepower?! That surprises me. The stock prop for that boat is the 10-1/4" x 14" aluminum Black Max.

A better prop for your needs might be the 10-1/2" x 12" or 10-1/2" x 13" Stiletto Triad II, part # 12312 and 12313 respectively.

Tom, thanks for the reply. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the boat has a 8x26 prop on it from the dealer. It just doesn't seem to have enough torque to push it up on plane with 4 people- it's very close though.
Someone suggested adding a Dolfin and trying it first. Do you think that would help?

Tim,

I can assure you your boat does *not* have an 8" x 26" (diameter x pitch) propeller on it. But it raises an interesting question: perhaps your dealer put the wrong prop on your motor.

Check the propeller for its size and part number and let's see what you really have.

No, I do not recommend a Doel Fin, at least not yet. A fin will not solve a performance problem caused by the wrong propeller.

Tom, I'll check the prop specs tonight, and post later.

It does have 10x14 prop on it from the dealer.

I've ordered the Stiletto 10-1/2x13 Triad II prop. I'll report back here on the results for anyone interested.

I would be quite interested in how it works for you, as i was thinking of doing something similar.
