This is my first post. I have learned a lot from you knowlegeable folks and thought I would share my experiences with a 1979 Montauk that I purchased new and have maintained in new condition for 28 years. Original motor, 90 Merc 2 stroke for 21 years and 1400 hours ocean and lake use. Head never off, normal maint only. At trade time, dealer tested and found compression and dyno within factory specs meaning no work needed. I was amazed. Always used quality oil and gas. Primary use now fishing and cruising.
New motor I chose was a new 1998 100 Merc in 2000. Bottom bolts would not fit due to shallow splash well in early Montauks. Solution was to use 4 through bolts at top and bottom of top mounting bracket holes and 2 blind stainless lag bolts with quality silicone at lowest bracket hole. Cavitation plate 1 1/2 inches above keel. 7 years and 300 hrs and all ok.
The 100 is 340 lbs and with a 60lb Evinrude 8 hp trolling motor, much too heavy for this boat,I feel. Old Merc was 288# and was perfect for handling, agility and overall feel and performance. Have gone to a 3.3 hp Merc kicker (28 lbs) on swing down bracket, trolls all morning on a 1 1/2 qt integrated tank. Will push boat above 6 mph. Fine for lake maybe not ocean. This nets out to about 370 lbs and although I love the performance this 113 cubic incher provides, great torque, 40 mph GPS at 5100 rpm, loafs at cruise 3300 rpm at 25, 4 gph , still heavier than I would like. I miss the way it used to handle. My next repower would be under 300 lb. 90 Yamaha 2 stroke or Merc 60 4 stroke? My Whaler is heavy, extra seats, fishing platform, dual batteries under console, electric trolling motor on bow, etc. Next post will be shorter I promise. Thanks for a great website.
