I have a new Outrage 190 with 150 Verado [The author mentioned the model year of his Mercury motor, however Mercury no longer markets their motors with any reference to the model year so it seems inappropriate to attempt to force a model year designation onto a Mercury motor--jimh]. I [traded] my 170 Montauk with 90 Mercury four stroke for it. What a difference! More comfort and no spray in chop water. The propeller is a Mirage 15.5 x 17 standard propeller. The WOT is 6,220-RPM. Top speed 45.9-MPH with one person and 60-gallons fuel. The motor is mounted in second hole.

Can I use the Enertia prop 14.2 x 18 for better mid-range and top speed?

Best regards--Imko

Imko,

Yes, the 18" pitch Enertia would be a good prop to try. It may provide a slightly faster top speed, though I am not sure your mid-range will improve much. The Mirage Plus is an excellent cruising propeller. The only real way to know is to try the Enertia and report back.

I think you will find that the Enertia has better grip than the Mirage Plus and I suspect your motor could easily be raised on set of bolt holes if you choose to use the Enertia.

I have tested both 19" Mirage Plus's and 19" Enertias on my own boat and the Enertia will, pitch for pitch, yield about 250 more RPM. In my case the top speed was unchanged but to be fair I would have to use a taller Enertia to conclude which propeller model is faster.

Thanks for the reply Tom!

The Optimax engines are mounted in 3rd
hole with the same Mirage prop. (135 & 150 HP)

Can i raise the Verado 150 in 3rd hole without venting?
At 20mph and higher it has a spray on the back of the boat.

Imko

New data:

Outrage 190 / 150 Verado
prop: 14 x 19"Laser II

Top speed 50,1 MPH (1 pers. 40 gallon fuel
Max rpm: 5840.

Good midrange and poor hole shot.

Best Regards,

Imko

That is a good top speed, is it measured by GPS?

What is the max RPM for your 150 Verado?

I think the 18 pitch Enertia may be a good choice as well.

Why would you want to compromise traction, acceleration (hole shot) and midrange to get a few more MPH on top where it is rarely needed. Have you tried a Vensura or Revolution 4? Just curious.

Perry: Max rpm for the Verado is 6400. Top speed is measured by GPS.

Highanddry: Youre right, traction and acceleration is more important than top speed. Is the Vensura a good prop for this boat/motor?
I want a good grip in chop water, and a good midrange / top speed.
You must trim down the Mirage to get a good grip. This Mirage plus is not the prop for the best top speed.

Imko

I think you want a Rev 4, probably the 17 inch pitch. I might have prefrred a Vensura because it seems to have slightly less cup and rake and is supposedly lighter than the Rev 4 and is also slightly smaller diameter. I think the Opti 150 would like the Vensura better but I bet the Verado will love the Rev 4. I am running the Rev 4 on my Opti.

The ENERTIA propeller has been marketed with the promise of more speed, however it is my impression so far that improvements in speed are not particularly spectacular and have been reported mainly in boats where the top speed range was quite high, say over 60-MPH. In those speed ranges an increase of a mile per hour is hard to come by, and getting a boost of a one mile per hour or more just by changing propellers is a very nice way to add to the boat speed instead of investing in more horsepower, which might be very much more expensive to add. However, in the more moderate speeds at which most of us operate our Boston Whaler boats, I have not seen any particularly outstanding results reported in top speed or mid-range speed, at least not the sort of results that would make me want to invest the approximately $600 needed to get an ENERTIA propeller.

If I have overlooked some prior report of great improvement on a Boston Whaler boat by the addition of an ENERTIA propeller I would very much welcome a reminder of where that data was given in the past.

Jim,

imko does not ask for a "great improvement" in his top speed. He simply asks if an Enertia might improve the mid range and top speed.

I think there is a good chance his top speed may be improved by using an Enertia propeller. I base this on my personal experience running both the Mirage Plus and Enertia propellers on my own boat.

Jim. Two things

I am regularly seeing new Enertia's advertized for $425-$450 plus $18 shipping, no sales tax.

Regarding year of manufacture of Verados, the new engines coming off the line now, 135-300HP, effectively as 2008 models, are offering the new forged pistons and, as Mercury advertizes, up to 22% better fuel economy than the 05-07 Verados, and up to 40% better than same HP Evinrude E-tecs.

So I think references to year of the motor are appropriate.

Mercury is the one who said "No more model years" so if they have obsoleted their Verado motor they need to come up with a new model name or designator. It makes no sense to tell customers in one breath that there are no model years, and then in the next breath talk about a "2008 Verado".

As far as I can tell, the Verado is now obsolete. There is a new model. When it comes out they better give it a name so we can talk about it without having to append a model year designator. I propose Verado GEN2.

How about changing VERADO to VERA-DOS wherein DOS is the Spanish word for two.

See this article for an interesting read on the elimination of model years. In a nut shell, bad for consumers, good for motor makers that rely on locked-out transoms for sales.

Interesting article Peter! My new Outrage 190 (2007) came with a Verado 150 (Nov. 2006) engine.

Best regards,

Imko

In my experience, switching from Rev 4's to Enertia (albeit on a 24ft twin) had little effect on cruise but did give a higher top end-about 1-1.5 mph. The price was increased sensitivity to trim with blow out coming in like an on/off switch.
