I'm not quite sure how it happened, but I now own a 1977 11 foot Standard, no power. I would like to hear your suggestions for used two-stroke power. How much horsepower does it take to plane one of these? I don't have much experience with smaller outboards, low price, and reliabilty will be big factors in any purchase, as this will be my 13 year old's boat. Thanks MmartyD |

I'd imagine a 15hp 4 stroke would be suitable |

Check the archives - lots on this topic - 25 best all around, can get sketchy at speed - versatile because you can take 25 off (if tiller) and put on 9.9 or 7 hp for less experienced operators or kids. |

I have on mine a 25 Evinrude 2005 short shaft and it pushes me at 27 mph. I love it |

I've got the 15HP Yamaha 2 stroke on mine and really like it with two people. I mounted it with bolts for a little more safety. These small outboards are easy to steal. http://myweb.cableone.net/barney9014/classic.htm Jim |

Merc, you need to clarify whether it is a tiller steered or has a wheel. Makes a difference in how much HP can be used. I have a 20 tiller steered on mine and wouldn't let the kids use it on a daily basis. Too much power for them, keep it to 10 or 15 HP for them. |

my 1979 11' sport with cable steering is suposed to be 20 Hp max. A standard tiller steer is suposed to be 15 hp max. Mine is powered with a 1982 mercury 25 2 stroke and with 600 lbs additional weight in the boat I have clocked almost 27mph on gps. This for me is scary fast in such a little boat and I would not trust an inexperienced kid with this much power until they get some real behind the wheel time. Put in a small light weight kid in such a small boat with very low waterline as these boats have and this much power mistakes can happen very fast. Make damn sure he leaves with life jacket strapped on and kill switch attached. remember this is a skiff not a jet ski it will not cut wakes like a jet ski can. Personally if I were handing it to a kid and watching them sail off I would power with no more than 9hp and let them live with that for at least a couple of years before moving up to maxium HP. |

Tiller is 10hp max but I would go with a 15 if you want. |

I have a 1988 11 sport( with steering wheel) and a 20 hp 1988 evinrude, With me (165 lbs) and 6 gallons of gas it will hit 30 mph on the gps. Many of my friends were thrown out of 11's and 13's as teenagers, one lost a leg, but nobody else hurt. not boats fault, but they are a little skittish at speed. I would go with a 15 or less with kids operating. |

It is a standard, so its a tiller boat. It took one hard hit to the bottom, that I need to repair. Even though he's a good kid and on the water all day in a sailing program, the 9.9 sounds like the way to go. Is there much difference in the small omc or merc motors? I don't have much experience with the smaller motors, any advice as to what years or models to avoid would be helpful. Thanks MartyD |

The 20hp Honda is very nice and at 102lbs it is perfect for this application. Just my 2 cents. |

In my opinion all the smaller engines are great no matter what brand. The Mercs are easier to work on because they are not set down in the cowl like older OMC's. Should be easy to find a nice used one for under $700. |

I don't think I want to sell yet. My main question now is will a 9.9 plane this boat with an adult and a teen aboard? Thanks MartyD

I have a 20 2stroke on my 11 - I put a set of doel fins on it and it acts like it has a 30 on it. The 11 likes to plow water until you're up on a plane, so if you can get it some lift, you will have much better performance. Thus you could get by with a 15 - I wouldn't go smaller, and have the performance similar to a 20hp. Bob |
