1986 17' Montauk with the original '86 Evinrude V-4.

This may be my imagination, having just fixed my tachometer after running without one for years, but it seems like she's having more trouble planing than she used to. Usually planes off around 3500-4000 rpm.

She also seems to be sticking her nose up a bit more than usual. Is she just proud of her new trailer springs and drain tubes or is it a symptom of some obvious problem or just my imagination?

There's been no weight changes in the stern and the drain tubes are solid with a recently-inspected dry transom...

Thanks!!

Is it just me or does 3500-4000 RPM seem a tad high to get this montauk on plane?

just curious.

My Montauk will plane at 2800 RPM's dragging a 150lb boy on a wakeboard with 2 others in the boat. That being said, I rev up to 4000 RPM's to get the boat and boy up, then throttle back to 2800-3000 to pull him around the lake. Motor is a 2001 Johnson 90 with a 13.75 x 17 Stilleto prop.Boat is a 1987 Montauk.

I'm thinking about weighing it just to make sure it's not a watery hull problem. I need to take her back out just to make sure it's really happening. Anything obvious that I can check in the meantime?

Thanks!

I'd check the compression, fuel filter, and maybe decarb the motor. What size prop are you using?
You would have to have 480lbs of water to equal the weight I'm carrying in teenagers.

SJohnson,

I have a very similar setup to Knothead. I have an 85 Montauk with a 2001 90 HP Johnson. Same deal, it planes around 2800 rpm's pulling my 150 lbs son on a surfboard with a driver and 1 passenger.

There is something going on there with your situation, whether it be engine compression or possibly water in hull.

I just had my motor rebuilt so we're keeping it under 3000 rpms for a while and we still have no problem planing when pulling kids on boards.

good luck,

Brian

Thanks for the responses. I know that it's unusual. Definately worrying. I don't think it's water, but who knows. I recently had a powerpack replaced on the motor, the compression was perfect and the motor seems strong. Not sure what to think of it. I pulled the screws for the transducer on the transom and there was no water coming out at all... I'm beginning to think it's a motor problem.

ThanksAll!

SJohnson
