I have a Boston Whaler 1981 Montauk 17, and, based on all the research and comments here, I am considering re-powering it with the Yamaha two-cycle 90-HP. Any comments would be appreciated. TY

For a classic two-cycle, the Yamaha 90 is a good choice. They seem to be selling at a decent price, at least "decent" in comparison to more modern motors that cost $3,000 more. |

The classic 90hp Merc 2 stroke is also still available for around $6175 plus shipping and rigging. They are a strong performer. |

I have seen the 90 Yammie under $5k for the engine. Parts are expensive like controls, tach, etc compared to others. The friggin key switch is $270 from the dealer. Top speed will be about 41-42. Cruise will be about 27-28 at 3800. Cruise will burn about 4-5gph. They are light(265lbs) quiet and reliable. |

PS...if you think you are going to buy it and install yourself, etc...no WARRANTY will be given. |

My 1982 Montauk has a new 75HP four stroke Yamaha on it. It burns 2 to 3 gallons per hour and cruise at 30MPH at 3500RPM. Alot more quiet then the two stroke. |

Hi TY, I have a customer's '83 Montauk at the shop and it has a '99 Yam 90hp 2-stroke on the transom. I've driven the boat many times (my uncle was the previous owner) and I consider that motor to be nearly perfect for that hull. It's a great motor that works well and is easy to service. In a couple of years they'll be NLA due to emission regulations. I'm all for lower emissions, but I'll be missing these motors. Certainly louder then the Merc 90hp 4-stroke on my Outrage and not as smooth at idle, but lots of punch, much lighter and they sound great. I say go for it if you like the idea and can get one for a good price. I doubt you'll be dissapointed :) |

I'd agree. This is a well balanced and high quality combo with a Montauk. I am VERY happy with mine. Simple, robust, and reliable. I'd buy another in a heartbeat. Dave . |

Looks like the motor may be around awhile longer. See Jim's article about emission credits. Certainly is a great motor and a nice fit on the Montauk. Brian |

Tohsgip. I have never heard that before, If I purchase and install my own engine on the boat it voids the warranty? |
