Rumors that HONDA was giving up on the outboard market seem less believable with the recent announcement of two new four-cycle outboard motors from this Japanese engine giant. HONDA have updated their 40 and 50-HP models with newer features that have been seen on the BF90D model introduced last year.

The new 40 and 50-HP models are designated the BF40D and BF50D. Don't you love how easy identification becomes when a manufacturer assigns a distinctive model name or identifier to an engine? Among the new features are:

--BLAST (or Boosted Low Speed Torque) air:fuel ratio and ignition timing

--new gear case design with less hydrodynamic drag, different anti-ventilation plate design

--improvement in fuel economy over prior models, in the range of 20-percent

--PGM-FI electronic fuel injection--the old models were still caburetor motors!

--more alternator output for better battery charger, now 17-Amperes

--almost same weight; the long-shaft BF50D weighs 99-KG, or 218-lbs, and that includes the propeller. So subtract 5 to 8-lbs to compare with other motors that don't include the propeller in their published weights.

All of these changes are things to like. It looks like HONDA will be competitive with other modern motors in this horsepower range, now we just need to see the price.

Those improvements should make the new BF40 and BF50 fine motors. They kept the weight down while adding EFI and other new features.

Now that Honda has EFI for their 40 HP and larger motors, they can focus their efforts on building a BF250/300.

Believe it or not but the Honda BF50 engine was probably the best sold engine in it's class here in the Benelux for many years now. It was also one of the lightest in it's class. I have no doubt that these new BF40D and BF50D engines will sell just as well. These small Honda's are the standard for 15 to 17-ft aluminum fishing boats for the many, many sports fishermen that fish for Walleye and Pike on the countless waterways in the low countries. They usually are equipped with tiller steering.

Even-though the Lund and Alumacraft dealers will sell you Mercury (which Lund has to try to), Yamaha, Suzuki and Evinrude, most prefer the Honda engine because of it's reliability.

Nice to see the EFI and a decent weight for a midrange motor. Local crabbers here are running the older Honda 50's and one fellow swears he has 5000 hours plus.

I too would like to see a price.

These new engines use Honda's PGM-FI core technology--programmed fuel injection. The PGM-FI approach to electronic fuel injection is a technique where the amount of fuel injected for each cylinder is computed based a multiple sensor inputs. The parameters which are considered are:

--engine temperature
--coolant temperature
--ambient air temperature
--barometric pressure
--throttle position
--engine RPM
--manifold vacuum

The engine control unit calculates the precise amount of fuel to give an optimal fuel-air mixture. This produces cleaner burning with lower emissions and better fuel economy.

HONDA may have been late in producing engines with electronic fuel injection, but their fuel injection system is sophisticated.
