I have a 1998 OptiMax 150-HP that I purchased used which has had numerous problems over the past four years that I have owned it. It has always been temperamental, especially after short periods of running and perhaps because of using ethanol fuels. I think much of the problem has to do with the injectors. Any comments would be appreciated along with recall information. Is there anything I can do about it at this late time as far as recalls are concerned? Thanks

Can you give us some detail on each of the problems.

Starting? Idling? Running rough?

If you give your engine serial number to a Mercury dealer they can run the numbers through their MercNet account and it will tell them exactly what service bulletins and campaigns apply specifically to your engine. If there are items that were not taken care of, too much time has gone by to expect Mercury to be willing to do it for free.

A few years ago I did an update on a 1998 135 OptiMax for one of my customers. There were quite a few [problems] that had not been properly taken care of and my customer ended up paying about $2,000 for all the work. Only certain serial number groups were affected, so that is why you MUST provide your number.

I recommend you follow the advice given by sosmerc.

In the situation we have here, a ten-year-old motor and a second-hand owner, I would be surprised if the manufacturer provided free repair or replacement for parts or services that were provided to the original owners while the motor was under warranty.
