I have a 1972 Outrage [probably an OUTRAGE 21] with a 1999 Johnson 175-HP caburetor engine. The 15-1/2 x 15 aluminum propeller has spun [its hub]. I [plan to buy] a stainless propeller. The current performance is good and [the motor reaches] 5,200-RPM at WOT. The boat is used for everything from running offshore for fishing to wake boarding and everything in between. [There is] strong [acceleration from a standing start]. I usually cruise at 3,500-RPM.In searching for a new propeller it seems this [15-1/2 x 15 size] is unusual and a little difficult to find. [Solicits] thoughts on [a 15-1/2 x 15] propeller on the Outrage. Is there a major difference in going down in diameter while retaining the existing pitch? Should the stainless propeller be a different size than the aluminum propeller? Thanx. Stu

Does not sound right at all. My 175 ran a 21" prop and did over 5400 and low 50's. You should be running a 14.5 x 19 at the least. |

In 1972 I believe the only OUTRAGE made was the 21-foot model, but it is always helpful to explicitly mention the length of the boat.Generally matching the diameter of an existing propeller is not a concern, other than being sure the diameter is not too large to fit into the propeller aperture on the gear case of the motor. Propeller designs adjust the diameter in proportion to the pitch and the expected application in terms of power and speed. When looking for a new propeller to replace one with a 15-inch pitch, don't be concerned if the diameter is not exactly the same. I am also surprised that you are running such a low pitch on that rig. |

I'm also surprised you're running a 15 pitch. Until I repowered last year, I had a 2000 Johnson 150hp carb motor on my 1971 Outrage 21, and I used a 17 pitch OMC aluminum prop...it turned up 5400-5500 rpm & did around 45 mph, with a rough coat of bottom paint. Your motor may have lost some compression, or may be in need of a tune up?As jimh said, dropping diameter slightly probably won't change much, if 15 is your correct pitch. You might gain a few rpm's with the smaller diameter, I'd guess. |

On my 1971 Outrage fitted with a 150 Optimax hung on a Rite-Hite Jackplate a 19p Laser II can set off the over rev. alarm. A 19p Mercury 4 Blade Ventura Offshore is used for everyday use and will spin at 5500 pushing the boat foward at 45 but it won't run way up high as the Laser. For thrills a 21p Laser II will run with the cavitation plate about 4 inches above the keel spin at 5500 RPM and see 55 Mph. The bottom of the boat is painted with Pettit Vivid Black the first coat was lightly sanded the second coat was thinned and the end result smooth as glass. |

If my recall is correct, I think LHG's OUTRAGE 21 has a 2.0-liter 150-HP. We were out on that boat some time ago, when the engine was only running on five of the six cylinders. We had five people and a dog. I think the propeller was a 19-inch pitch three-blade. The boat was still able to to get on plane and run well. I can't imagine that with a 175-HP running on all six cylinders you'd have to turn a 15-inch pitch propeller. |
