I am contemplating buying a 40hp Suzuki 4 stroke for my 13' and would like to hear some comments about weight and performance. I am currently running a 1994 Evinrude 40 on a CMC130 PTnT plate that weighs about 235-240lbs w/SS prop so it should be about the same on static trim @ 243lbs.

Tohsgib, I just picked up a1973 130 sport with a 1993 Evinrude 40, and spent a lot of time searching for the specs, but finally found them: Outboard Motors 1993 EVINRUDE E40ELET Motor Type: Gasoline Volts (Electric Motors): N/A Thrust (Electric Motors): N/A Horsepower: 40 Cylinders: 2 Start Type: Electric Dry Weight: 185 Power Tilt and Trim: No Dry weight 185 seems to be way less than you estimated. Trim and Tilt could add 20 lbs. or so, but I don't thing it would add 55 lbs. I'd be seriously concerned if I had 1 had a 240-lb motor on the back of my 330 lb. boat. Is your CMC plate a setback plate, and if so how much of a setback? Do you think the setback improved or reduced performance. I'm thinking of putting a small 2 or 4-inch manual jackplate on mine... |

i am running a 40 mercury four stroke on a 1968 13ft whaler. if you wanna go fast then its a good motor. i had a 1970 13ft with a 25 yamaha four stroke and it was a nice ride, but not very fast. i wouldnt do power tilt trim due to the fact you can flip the boat if you tilt the motor too high. i installed the se sport 300 anticavitation plate and the boat handles much better. |

The CMC is not only a setback but also power tilt and trim and weighs 45lbs and the SS prop is another 10lbs so yes I am running that kind of weight.I am bagging the 40 Suzuki idea, deal fell through and the weight is high. As far as PTnT is concerned, would not own a boat without it. My 13 will only do 32mph until I trim it up and then she will get to about 38mph. You can also control the porpoising and loads with it as well. If you believe PTnT is the what causes you to flip...think again but it can help if you are inexperienced. PS my friend has a 13 with new 40hp Mercury 4 stroke and we ran neck and neck at almost 38mph. |

Hey Nick,What was your impression of that 40-hp Mercury 4-stroke on that 13-footer? Was it too heavy in your opinion? Erik |

It is not too heavy but not light either. I think 240 is pushing the limits but static trim is fine. Problem is cruising at slow speeds she squats pretty low in the stern. You also have to watch when coming off plane or the boat and engine will swamp. |

I'm running a 1972 50hp Evinrude on my 1967 13' Classic and it runs great. The motor weight alone is 185 lbs. With the battery and tank in the back, it still sits ok in the water but I wouldn't put any more weight in the back of that boat. I think if I was to buy a 4 stroke I would stay under 200 pounds.Dave |

How about a new EFI Honda BF50? It weighs only 214 lbs. |
