[Seeks recommendations between a 1994 Mercury and a 1997 Evinrude. Both are 225-HP.]

Is the Mercury motor fuel injected?

Is there a difference in price?

Were they both freshwater motors?

Have you tried flipping a coin?

Is the Evinrude motor a Ficht model?

"Is the Evinrude motor a Ficht model? "

No. The first Evinrude Ficht models came out in 1997/1998 in the 150 and 175 HP range. The 200 and 225s were launched in 1999.

It's not a bad idea to go with the make that would be better supported by the local dealer.

[Explains that the motors are bundled with boats so the price is not directly comparable.] Both are saltwater motors. [I] may end up flipping that coin. [T]his will be our first Whaler, so I want it to be a motor that can provide the same reliability that I know the boat will. [Explains that he was inquiring because he] just was not sure if anyone had heard anything bad about those particular motors during that time period.

Thank you for your help.

I must have lost something here.....

Are the motors mounted on a boat already?

Condition VS price...always go with condition.

1994 was the first year of the Merc 3.0 liter 225. It's a strong engine, probably more powerful than the Evinrude, but that was it's first year and there were some typical first model year problems, if I remember correctly. Those may have been corrected by now, however.

Look at corrosion on both engines. Merc's EDP system was generally better than the OMC paint jobs of those years. They did not hold up well in tropical salt conditions.

If the Evinrude is clean cosmetically, you might want to go with that one.

Mercury motors use a plastic gear to drive their oil mixing system. If this gear fails the repair is about $1,500. Most Mercury owners abandon the oil system if it has failed and resort to pre-mixing due to the excessive cost of repair.

The Evinrude oil mixing system can be completely replaced if necessary with all new components for about $400.

Pre-mixing for large fuel tank volumes is not particularly convenient.

The 225-HP Evinrude is likely a 3.3-liter motor. Horsepower ratings for motors are consistent under the ICOMIA standard. An argument is often made that engines with more displacement are more powerful than engines of equal horsepower ratings but with less displacement.

Newer model year motors typically mean fewer hours of use, which may be more significant in boats used in saltwater.

A comparison of the oil systems on these motors is given in

The 225 has a 3.0L displacement. The 3.3L displacement was first used on the Ficht DFI outboards and, as far as I know, never used on the carburated 90 degree V6 225 which is what a 1997 Evinrude 225 is.
