With the new motors these days is the risk of damaging your gearcase just as great as before if you hit something with a stainless prop? Or is there something in the shafts that will absorb some of the impact?Thanks

Most propeller manufacturers have taken to using hub kits. These allow the manufacturers to cast a single propeller for use on almost any engine brand. Simply buy the correct hub kit insert for your motor brand and size and you are good to go. If you change engines, simply buy a new hub kit for about $40. Since most of sleeves in these kits are made of a high strength plastic, this piece is designed to fail usually before any damage is done tot he lower unit. |

I have an aluminum prop that will break off and I keep the stainless steel prop as a spare. Of course remember a wrench and a block of wood so that you are actually able to change the prop in case of an accident. |

Here we go again with the SS prop doing damage myth/BS. If you live in or around a LOT of rocks, use aluminum. If you boat like 95% of us do, use SS. Any hit hard enough to take out a lower unit will happen no matter what material you use. I have NEVEr taken out a foot and have torn blades off a SS prop. |

Not a dumb question at all. It shows up at least once a year here and I even hear dealers or some mechanics say the same thing. I still say it is BS. Now if I lived in an area where I was bending blades every month I would go with an aluminum to be on the safe side but your repair bills are gonna kill ya at $50-100 per pop. |

I tried a stainless on my Honda for a short time and noticed there is a bit more of a clunk when you put it in gear compared to the lighter aluminum prop. if you wakeboard or ski a lot like I like to during summer, then that may or may not affect gearbox life span. i would be curious to hear opinions on this. note that during a good day of wakeboarding you are in and out of gear hundreds of times, especially if the current is running, the wind is blowing and there are other boats in the area.My ss was a bit too much pitch so I just sold it and went back to the stock aluminum. |

I agree with Nick, it is an old wive's tale that using an aluminum propeller will save your motor in the event of the prop strike.What will happen with an aluminum prop is the blades will be easily mangled if you hit a piece of driftwood or touch bottom. With stainless steel the prop will be much more likely to not be damaged at all being five times stronger than aluminum. In reality, you may be safer with an SS propeller because it may hold together where an aluminum prop can be destroyed leaving you stranded. The hub kits that Joe refers to are Mercury's Flo-Torq hub kits that use a plastic insert that is field replaceable. But all modern outboard propellers have had protection built into them (with just a few exceptions) in the form of a pressed in rubber insert if they do not have the Flo-Torq hub or its licensed siblings: Michigan XHS, BRP TBX, Precision Guardian SQ-Lok, etc. These hubs ae designed to let get before the propeller blades are completely destroyed or your outboard is damaged. Any prop strike severe enough to damage a the drive train of an outboard propeller will also do so if you use an aluminum prop. I think the myth is perpetuated by fathers teaching their sons this advice over the years the same way we still embrace the old myth of never leave a battery sitting on a concrete floor. Maybe, generation ago, there was *some* basis for these bits if advice but there is none today. I try to squash these myths every time they pop up. Yes, stainless steel propellers are much heavier than aluminum propellers and that can contribute to "shift clunk" and "prop rattle". But again, the hub systems available can help remedy these problems. The Flo-Torq III and Flo-Torq IV hub kits are designed to be spring-loaded acting as a damper between the propeller and the prop shaft to help absorb that shift clunk. PowerTech Propellers has the Cushion-Lok hub system that allows you to adjust the degree of softness by using different rubber rods in the hub coupling to fine tune strength of the hub to eliminate shift clunk. So there are lots of options for using a stainless steel propeller. The only real advantage of an aluminum prop is that is costs half or one third as much as staibless steel, but on outboards that can cost $10,000 or more, why would anybody care about saving a couple hundred bucks on something that the boat's entire performance depends on? It's like putting retreads on your Porsche. The fuel economy improvements alone with stainless steel will likely pay for the slight price premium. |

I have personally inspected an outboard drive shaft from a 225 HP motor that was sheared due to a prop strike using an aluminum prop.Not pretty, and it shattered my previously held notion that aluminum props "save" the outboard drive shaft. To the point made above, they probably contribute to potential safety problems by leaving you with a mangled prop resulting from minor interaction with flotsam or other small debris in the water. I switched to SS late last summer and am extremely pleased with the change, after buying and repairing 6 or 7 aluminum props over 2 years. I swear that even getting CLOSE to an obstruction bent the blades! Worse, I have twin engines, so even a minor 'tweak' on one prop made it difficult to sync motors due to changed operating characteristics. Anyway - Go with a quality ss propeller with the exchangable hub kits and keep a second hub kit and perhaps a lightweight aluminum prop as a spare. |

Tom you make a good point about the batteries. Could it be that maybe the early SS or bronze props had solid hubs? My friend has a solid hub 25" on his Baja because a rubber hub will just spin at 70+ and he has to be VERY carefull not to bump anything with that puppy. |

YOU GUYS ARE OVER SELLING THE SS PROPI boat in the Western Sound Ny area and there are rocks all over the place which can be disconcerting when you are chasing blues and stripers. The aluminum prop cracks immediately if you hit a rock and can usually get you home ( I also have my stainless steel prop in storage so that in an emergency I can replace it. I am not quite sure what you guys are talking about in terms of long arms and wet suits. I have done it a couple of times by myself. Of course increasing familiarity with an area lets you avoid the whole problem to begin with. I don't notice much of a difference in terms of performance and I don't want to deal with the whole lower unit gear shaft being messed up when I could just replace the aluminum prop for a 120 bucks . |

Can't tell you what would have happened if we'd had aluminum, but we had a rock hit last summer (brother-in-law driving) that bent about 1" off the end of the blades on our stainless prop. The prop and the gearcase were destroyed, but it still got us home.The replacement prop is also stainless. Tim |

And right there is the essence of The Myth. As if the choice between stainless steel and aluminum were the choice between replacing a $120 aluminum prop and an entire gear case. Poppycock. If you are going to drive your boat on he rocks, you WILL have gear case damage. Tim wonders what would have happened last summer if they had had an aluminum prop instead of a stainless steel prop. I know what would have happened: the exact same thing. Look, no propeller or hub system yet invented is going to save the day in every situation. If you hit solid rock, you will have damage. There is no magic spell surrounding an aluminum propeller to protect your motor. Anybody who argues that there is really no difference in performance between aluminum and stainless propellers has not tried a good stainless steel prop. There is a world of difference. |

SS Prop: $350 Aluminum: $150 (retail) Prop Repair $65-$85 depending on damage, and it is never the same as new.I guess it really depends on how frugal you are and where you boat. Like I said, I chewed through lots of aluminum props in two years - one of them actually "threw" the repair on the first shot out of the hole upon reinstalling it. And again...I've personally inspected a beefy prop/drive shaft out of a 225 HP that was sheared clean after hitting an obstruction using an aluminum propeller. All of my propeller damage was done at slow speed, where striking the same objects with a SS prop would have resulted in an engine stall, rather than a mangled prop, excessive vibration, etc. My personal take on it, after the experience I've had, is that the most frugal decision is actually to spend money on a quality SS Propeller and enjoy many years of use. I probably spent close to $1000 on aluminum props and prop repairs in two years, and here I am on season two with SS props that cost me less than that and perform better. |

It would seem to me that if you hit a submerged rock, the first thing to make contact is the leading edge of the gear case, skeg and then the prop. So before the prop encounters anything, the gear case has already absorbed a good portion of the impact. |

Tom, I actually wasn't wondering what would have happened to the propshaft and gearcase, under the same circumstances, with an aluminum prop; rather just stating that I didn't know from direct observation. From the damage, I do think it's likely that if we'd had an aluminum prop on there we'd have lost all three blades and have been making a call to SeaTow. With the stainless, we were at least able to make it home - which was about 40 miles, so I am glad of it. For reference, the mechanic who replaced our lower unit agreed with Tom - said we'd have been no better off with aluminum. Tim |

TA has a great point. At speed the gearcase is gonna hit WAAY before the prop does so damage is already done. At slow speed the SS prop would just shrug it off where the alum would need a refurb. I hit an unmarked rockpile in my 15' at about 25mph. Kicked the engine up. I just whacked the skeg luckily but had a skeggard on it. Not a knick on the prop and the skeggard buckled but was easily straightened with a hammer. If skeggard was not there, skeg would have sheared, prop would have hit, and damage would have occured...to what extent I am unsure. Skeggards are worth the $100. |

Buckda, have you ever hit a submerged rock and just had the engine stall? I'd be interested to know if anyone has done that - I would think in that situation you'd trash the propshaft and driveshaft no matter what.Tim |

Not on my personal boat, but yes.On my 15 I ran across a gravel bar in the river once and trashed the aluminum prop to hell...since i was running at speed, the engine did not stall and I was able to coast off the gravel bar before the boat really came off plane. With the 150 Merc on my 18, I hit a stump and stalled the motor (at idle) - SS prop didn't even show the mark. If you will note in my post above - slow speed was a component of my assertion. Running flat out at cruise and striking a submerged rock is quite different than doing it when idling along in a difficult patch of water. You do the type of boating that I like to do (limited chart availablility/remote water, etc. and you will find bottom. In fact, a true test of seamanship would be to navigate the Georgian Bay Small Craft Route without touching bottom or going more than 1/4 mile off course. That would be a fun "competition" for a Whaler owner event... |

I've stalled a 3 cylinder 70 HP Johnson with a stainless steel propeller on a 15' Striper. Motoring up over some smaller cobbles with sparse boulders, the stern squatted and banged around quite a bit. Some curls, dings and notches in the prop was the result, as expected. |

BTW, sheik...I'm a former neighbor of yours. I lived on City Island for a couple of years in the late '70s when I was working for the Westchester/Rockland Gannett chain as a news photographer. In fact, that's where I first fell in love with Whalers, fishing for stripers and blues in a co-worker's smirkless Montauk precursor. Small world, eh...with arms too short to change props at sea, though ;-)Tony |

I've hit a rock at idle. It nicked the skeg, stalled the engine (a 115 4-stroke), and put a small nick in the stainless prop that was easily filed out.I've also hit floating wood up to the size of a 4x4, and as far as I can tell the stainless prop either bounced off it or cut through it. Either way, no damage. Not that it would never happen, mind you, but at least in that incident I got away lucky. The stainless prop also goes through sand very nicely, and comes out shiny and polished. -Bob |

Fortunately, most of the bottoms in my neck of the woods are soft. I have not run hard aground, but I do know when I get too close; my prop has a new shine to it and is put away looking better than when I took it out. |

Some years ago, I was "flying" (skimming, revving, etc) along at about 45mph in the Fla Keys in my 17 Whaler...had fairly new 90 Johnson on it.Had a 13-1/4 17 aluminum, prop, and I whacked a piece of concrete in shallow water.....was low tide, very stupid on my part. That said, one blade of that prop was missing - broke off at the hub. I putt-ted slowly back to the resort where I was staying - ran very rough since it was obviously out of balance with a blade missing. I believe that had I been running my stainless prop that major lower unit damage would have occurred, probably catastrophic. In this case, my skeg was bent slightly like a banana...that and the prop only damage. Mav |

There is no evidence to support that claim, hence the myth. I used to run aluminum props but got tired of replacing or paying to have them repaired due to inadvertant strikes to the coral bottom. A stainless steel prop only gets scratches that can be polished out when hitting coral bottom.

Perry - this wasn't an inadvertent strike to a coral bottom. The only way I suppose one could provide "evidence" would be to test it. Would your boat be available? "Myth" is not the term I would have used. I told you what happened and what I observed; my limited experience and gut feeling from this occurence is that when I am running in shallow areas where a hard strike is possible, I'll run aluminum, as I'd rather that it give way than my lower unit. That said, there are many variables, and no guarantees on damage prevention whether one runs SS or aluminum. Mav |

As has been mentioned twice in this thread, Almost all propellers (excepting perhaps racing boats, or older propellers) use either Mercury's Flo-Torq hub kits (or aftermarket system) that use a plastic insert that is field replaceable or some form of a pressed in rubber insert. These hubs are designed to let get before the propeller blades are completely destroyed or your outboard is damaged. So I really not sure how the claim that a aluminum propeller will provide better protection for your outboard can be substantiated. |

Hi there, TransAm - I understand your point, but being mentioned twice in a thread doesn't make it any more so than me mentioning 1x what I experienced. More than one side to consider here, and there are variables to the equation that can the outcome. That's because you were running an aluminum prop. It does not take much to destroy an aluminum prop; a small piece of driftwood will do a number on one. I'd much rather replace a the $10.00 sleeve in my hub-kit than a whole aluminum prop. |

Mav, you don't seem familiar with the Flo-Torq hub systems. The whole kit-Lock Net, Tab Washer, Drive Sleeve Adapter, Drive Sleeve and Thrust Washer is $40. If enough shear force is placed on the hub, the Drive Sleeve will fail. A replacement sleeve may not even be $10. It is hard to say what exactly would have happened if you had a SS prop. It sounds like your lower gearcase/skeg took the brunt of the blow since it was left so bent. Many things could have happened. But I will say, it would be HIGHLY unlikely the prop would have suffered the fate your aluminum prop did and your ride home would have been more comfortable and balanced. I am not taking anyone to task for choosing aluminum, just the myth that aluminum is a superior application when submerged objects are encountered. |

Mav -- Not to belabor the point, but let's review your personal experience, which is always a good lesson for others.You struck a piece of concrete with an aluminum propeller. A blade of the propeller broke off. This is consistent with what everybody in this thread has already pointed out; aluminum propellers are weak. I should also be pointed out what you did not experience: striking a piece of concrete with a stainless steel propeller and suffering a catastrophic failure of your lower unit. It is illogical to conclude that you would have suffered a catastrophic failure of your lower unit if you had a stainless steel propeller. Your personal experience does not support that conclusion. |

Here some of my personal experience:I've boated all my life. I have operated outboard powered boats since I was a young teenager over 30 years ago. I have owned numerous power boats including seven Whalers over that period of time. I think I have owned about two dozen different outboard motors and sterndrives. I have bent, torn, mangled and otherwise damaged countless aluminum propellers (in my teenage years) and have spent a fair number of dollars on aluminum propeller repairs. I have bent a stainless steel propeller blade exactly once, two years ago during a full throttle high speed test run in my Revenge going 47 MPH when I struck an unknown floating object in the water and bent the tip of one blade on one propeller almost 90 degrees. The propeller, a Mercury Offshore four blade, was repaired to like-new condition for about the same price as an aluminum three bladed bought at discount. That same propeller is still giving good service on a friend's Bertram 25 today. That's my personal experience. Draw what conclusions you may. |

The retail price of a Flo-Torq Delrin drive sleeve is about $20. You can usually find them for a little less than that.No special tools are required to replace the drive sleeve of a Flo-Torq hub kit, you just drop it in the propeller and put the prop back on the motor. |

It is only your belief that you would have damaged your lower unit if you were using a stainless prop. But go ahead and continue the myth that you are better off with an aluminum prop. I'll stay with a high perfromance, stronger stainless steel prop with a replaceable hub sleeve.

I DID buy into the "myth," and I'm glad that this discussion cleared the matter up some for me. On the other hand, I think there's a little myth-making on the part of the stainless prop absolutists. Sure, on a racing boat where you're trying to squeeze out that last little mph at WOT, the difference between a stainless and an alloy prop is no doubt important, perhaps critical. But for our modest Whaler workboats cruising around in their designed fashion...do you guys really think a well made, properly-pitched aluminum prop is hugely disadvantageous compared with a perfectly dialed-in stainless one? I don't, for my uses anyway. I've gotten more-than-adequate performance from high-end aluminum props over the last almost seven years on a series of four stroke motors on various Whalers. I AM currently looking--very slowly and cautiously--for my first stainless prop for my little classic 15 CC/Yamaha 60 4/s, 'cause that boat is the closest I've come to a high performance machine, and I might want to eake out another mile per hour or so, just for the halibut ;-)Tony |

Hi Tony, when I said "high performance", I didn't necessarily mean top speed. A good stainless steel prop like the Enertia I use provides excellent hole shot, and more importantly, outstanding grip in rough water. The aluminum props I tried have nowhere near the cupping and design to prevent ventilation in the sloppy water where I use my boat. Also, I have found that the fuel economy at cruise is much better with a good stainless steel prop. So, there is more to performance than just top speed. |

I can't argue with you about this stuff, Carson, after experiencing first hand the performance you've got dialed into your sweet 190, especially since you're running "only" a 130 (or 140?) Honda four stroke on that boat. I clearly remember being amazed as your Whaler blasted up into the mid-40s in Kaneohe Bay on that fine day several years ago.Anyway, depending upon finances, I might just finally make the plunge and soon go stainless with my Yami 60. If I do, I'd love to be blown away by the difference, but my little skiff is so quick and nimble right now with its stock Yamaha 15P aluminum prop, and she gets such incredible fuel economy, that I'll be amazed as well as impressed if I notice much difference. I'm up two holes right now, t.a., and my boat just breaks 40 mph on flat calm salt at 5800 rpm alone with a featherweight kicker, full 18 gallon fuel tank and another 2 gallon for the kicker, and lots of fishing junk, anchor chain & rode, tools, 30 lbs of lead weights in my cooler seat starboard-side forward of the console, etc. Tracks like she's on rails, light as she is, even wide open...but I don't spend much time at that speed, let me tell you. |

I switched props and was able to go from #2 hole to #4 and she's screaming to go higher. I need to put jack plates on my Whalerdrive. I wonder if anyone has done that. |

Tom W. Clark and Elaelap: All I have to give this crowd a hand for the intensity, articulateness and zeal of this conversations based around the relative implications of aluminum versus SS.
I am sure the stainless steel gets slightly better performance figure, but Elaelap's point that exactly what we mean by performance with BW work boats (the kind of work I like: fishing, cruising, hanging, bringing kids out), should not be confined to WOT speeds, or 0-40 planing speeds. Tom W. Clark however needs some informal logic lessons. His entertaining tale of his boating experiences--given to establish credibility about his claims--creates two myths of its own: 1) I used lots of aluminum props as a youth, thats when I broke them, and that's what informs my knowledge of aluminum props Sorry Tom, prop breakage is not just an excess of youth. Sometimes it happens to us older, maturer folk and not just the yahoos. Plus if your experience with aluminum props only occurred as a youth maybe your raging hormones at the time clouded your judgment? 2) The one time I bent a SS prop it was a strange substantial form of plankton Your one empirical example of a SS prop that was damaged was hitting an unidentified floating object. The hunch, hypothetical, analogy, lived experience around aluminum props saving you from more serious lower gear drive damage is hitting a stationary object that shears the aluminum prop quickly and does not lead to an impact like Ray Lewis and Brandon Jacobs Elaelap and others who are interested in changing props at sea.
My experience with changing props comes from my first boat and learning the ropes around a very rocky area. I broke a few aluminum props ( I was always able to get home put putting when I didn't have a spare prop). You need some proper pliers for the pin, a big wrench the size of the nut on your prop, and a 12 inch piece of a 2" by 4", or even better a 2"x 8." You raise the anchor to its maximum height. Depending on the waves and how cold the water is you can either lean out over the engine or sit on the transom or the swim platform. Remove the cotter pin by squeezing the bottom and pushing and pulling it out. Insert the block of wood between the prop and the engine so the prop doesn't spin. Be careful that the block of wood doesn't fall into the ocean. Loosen the nut. As you take the nut off make sure the nut doesn't fall into the ocean. Put the nut in a safe place. carefully pull the prop free and with throw it into the ocean in a fit of pique or store it away. Replace the old prop with the spare you have cleverly stashed somewhere on the boat. Don't drop the prop into the ocean. Don't drop the woodblock into the ocean. Don't drop the nut into the ocean. You will do alright without the cotter pin until your next trip. I do have rather long arms and I much prefer to do this when I somebody is with me but it can be done alone.

Professor,You missed the point. I damaged a lot of aluminum propellers in my youth not because I was young but because I used aluminum propellers back then. I have not used an aluminum propeller since I was a teenager. I have not spent much at the propeller repair shop in the intervening thirty some years. |

Guys buy what you friggin want, think what you want. Heck people bought Force outboards and Bayliners. I have dredged a LOT of real estate with my boats over the decades. To the point where I was grounded many a times waiting for tide. I NEVER blew a lower unit in my life. Again if I lived amongst rocks or limestone bottoms, etc. Sure an alum might be better although more expensive due to repairs. For the rest of us who are willing to drop $250+/- for a nice stiletto prop from Tom, we are smiling with our choice and performance gains. For anyone who does not think a SS prop adds better performance, you have not pushed your boat to the limits or even close to make that kind of statement. Now would my 13' handle much different with a either prop, probably not. Does a 15' with a 70hp..hell yes it does. |

My experience changing props at sea has yielded the following position:1. It can be done. 2. You probably won't like doing it. Having a buddy boat is the single best (safest, warmest) way, however, a buddy boat may not be very interested in the business end of your skeg pointed at his hullside in a lumpy sea. Most Whalers do not have transom ladders/platforms. You will want a lanyard for your tools and the spare prop, prop nut, etc. That is why prop wrenches come with a hole in the handle - for a lanyard. FROM THE BOAT: Anchor with bow into the waves, if possible/safe. Tilt the motor all the way forward. Put on a PFD. Tie yourself to the leaning post so you can lean out over the transom and not fall in (I use a dock line and cushion my belly with a square throwable cushion or another PFD. Use lanyards for all items until the very moment you need them. Tie the lanyard to your PFD or your belt - not just wrapped around your hand/forearm. FROM THE WATER - BRR! (Make sure the water temperature is safe!). All needed items go into the splashwell. Tools are clipped to the transom eye so they can't be lost. Tilt motor until the prop is JUST out of the water. Put on a PFD and jump in. I keep a spare prop and TWO spare prop nuts, thrust washers and SEVERAL cotter pins aboard the boat so if I lose something overboard while changing, it is not the end of the world. Go slow and deliberate. Good luck. |

I think what this thread needs is a volunteer with an aluminum prop. We need to be scientific about this. I know just the rock to point you towards, and I already know that hitting this particular rock at speed ruins not only the prop, but also the lower unit.Any takers? All I know about changing props at sea--and thankfully I've never had to try--was when I stupidly wrapped fifty feet or so of mono around my Outrage 18/Yamaha F115's prop shaft, trolling for salmon in 50 degree water, alone in my boat with no "buddy boat" standing by. At first I thought it would be relatively easy to clear the stuff. I turned off my motor (duh) after I unsuccessfully tried unwinding the fishline by idling the motor in reverse while I tugged on the mono. Then I pulled out my pocket knife, leaned over the transom (with the motor still tilted down), and couldn't reach the prop, at least not with any authority to do any good. Hmmm, I said to myself, no prob...just tilt the motor up and Bob's yer uncle. Nope. Even tilted up--and I tried various angles in between--I couldn't reach the prop shaft with the point of my very sharp knife, at least not coming in sideways with enough strength to carve out that mono mess. There is just NO WAY (pace sheikofthesea and others) that without jumping in the water that I could have removed and replaced the prop itself (especially when you think of how solidly the prop is afixed to the shaft, even when you've removed the nuts, washers, etc). No way. For me anyway ;-) I'm here to learn. Maybe I'm missing something.Tony By the way, I finally dealt with the problem, as my boat drifted closer and closer to a nasty, rocky headland, and my hair grew even more gray, by lashing my knife to my boathook and thus gaining the additional length--that I didn't have with my arms (and I'm six feet tall)--to painstakingly cut out the fishline. |

Well Tony brings up a good point, but here's what I was trying to say. The leading edge of your gear case is positioned approximately 16" forward of the propeller (depending on the size of your motor), and in direct line with your propeller. So, in order for something to hit your propeller, assuming you are moving forward, it would first have to encounter your gear case in some substantial fashion likely imparting most of the damage, including enough resistance to dislodge your lower unit. It seems unreasonable to suggest that the lower unit somehow skirted the rock entirely and the propeller clipped the rock tearing off the lower unit.From what I have gathered, the alleged knock on stainless steel propeller damage to lower units from underwater contact is that when the propeller encounters a significant obstruction, and that obstruction prevents the propeller from continuing to spin. Since the engine is still applying substantial force to spin the propeller, something has to give, and that would be in the drive components, likely the gears. However, with the advent of modern hub kits and other bushings, the likelihood of this happening is remote. It is also hard to believe that a propeller alone, stainless or otherwise, would play any significant role in tearing a lower unit off of a motor. |

I understand now. You've got a nice theory there, but I think you are assuming that the rock you hit is very regular in shape, so the skeg always hits first. It's certainly possible to hit an irregular rock (most of them are that way in Maine) and miss the skeg and gearcase entirely and still take out the prop.In our case (I was not the skipper BTW) we had a very small nick in the skeg about 2" up from the bottom, nowhere near the gearcase itself. All 3 prop blades were folded back about 1", the propshaft and driveshaft were bent and, according to the mechanic, in all such cases he has seen the gearcase casting itself is bent out of alignment, so it was replaced. That's only one mechanic's opinion, but certainly the insurance folks didn't give us any grief about replacing it. This was with a 2004 Yamaha F200, which I would consider a fairly modern motor. So maybe the possibility is remote, but I'd say "not remote enough." BUT we still don't have an example of anyone doing the same type of thing with an aluminum prop and experiencing no damage to the driveline and gearcase, so we have no way of knowing if that would be better. Tony -A couple of times a year (I do it once, but you have an extended season!) - remove the propeller and use BRP Triple Guard Grease (or equivalent) to lubricate the splines on the drive shaft and inside the hub of the prop. Don't be stingy! That keeps the prop nice and easy to remove/replace when necessary. This grease is waterproof and clings really well to the metal components....and it is difficult to wash off. It should last at least 100 hours on a trailered motor. I have not experience with a moored motor; but would suggest that perhaps you need to increase the schedule, as with most things on a moored vessel. |

Well Tim, what can I say. You seemed to have defied all the odds, or at least almost all the odds. Since you now know where not to take your boat, for lighting to strike twice and you were to have a similar catastrophic event elsewhere would truly be amazing. So if this is the basis for advocating aluminum over stainless, well, I have no defense. |

Don't construe anything I've said as advocating aluminum - I'm just trying to point out that in this thread we have no credible apples to apples comparison between prop strikes with the two different materials. We still have a (new) stainless prop on the Yamaha, and both the props I have for my Johnson are stainless. The mechanic said aluminum would have been no better, but I have no direct evidence to back that up. I guess if someone could prove to me aluminum would save my driveline, I'd consider switching over - especially if my brother in law is going to keep driving the Yammy! Tim |

I ripped off a pice of my skeg and one of the fans of my aluminum prop, but I did not damage my lower unit( this assessmet is based on that I can still go as fast as I usually do). I am looking to put one of those "replacement skegs" on this year. I m thankful for my aluminum prop but I don't knwo what would have happened if I was wearing a SS prop at the time. Again, I love it. Hope to see some folks at the BW get together around the Statue of Liberty in June.

Sheik, be sure to check your lower unit oil for metal chips and water - our motor ran just fine after the hit, even though it turned out it was really trashed. Not sure how long it would have run, but it made a 2 hour run home with no trouble.Tim |
