I'm thinking of picking up a Yamaha 8-HP four-cycle motor as a kicker for my Guardian 17, a heavier MONTAUK hull with forward console. I say 8-HP since it's the same weight as a 6-HP. I have searched and read all the previous posts and wanted to know from people who have tried this setup. Some say it's too heavy and others say it's fine. I've already moved my [dual] batteries forward and wanted the kicker to use as a trolling motor, not just for emergency. All replies are appreciated.

A lot depends on how much weight is on your transom right now. What kind of motor is primary motor and how heavy is it?

Because you have your console moved forward and the batteries up there too, you should be able to add F8 kicker.

Thanks Perry, It's a Yamaha 90 two-cycle. Would like to swap it out someday with a 70-HP four-cycle.

Using the maximum recommended transom weight for a MONTAUK 17 hull, which was once stated as 410-lbs, compare the combined weight of your main engine and your auxiliary engine to that maximum. This should give you an indication if the Yamaha 8-HP four-cycle motor will be too heavy to use as an auxiliary on your GUARDIAN 17.

in 2003 Boston Whaler gave the Guardian 17 a maximum engine weight rating of only 330 pounds.

Thanks guys, I wonder why the max engine weight would be less on a guardian, mine's an 1988 if it makes a difference. The high thrust 8 weighs 102 or 104 for the 9.9 that would be approx 360-365 total with the 90 Yamaha. minus another 19 if I went with a non high thrust 6 or 8. I would end up being under that if I swap to a 60 4stroke later on. Just trying to figure it out before I drop the coin. appreaciate it.
